Summer Reading II

Vacation book lists filled with old favorites, new names, best sellers

CHRYSA CHIN
Executive vice president of strategy and development,
National Basketball Players Association

Daniel Amen: I like to read books about psychology. It helps me understand how people respond and react.
Ken Blanchard: I reread “One Minute Manager” regularly, and find new things in there every time.
Next on my list is “Nothing to Lose, Everything to Gain,” by Ryan Blair — I can’t wait to read it.

LINDSAY PURCE
Account director, consulting, Lagardère Unlimited

“She’s Come Undone,” by Wally Lamb
I enjoy novels that feature complex characters, and this book is a hilarious yet tragic coming of age story. The various emotions that result make this an engaging page turner.
“The Devil in the White City,” by Erik Larson
I just started this book, which is a historical crime novel documenting a very interesting time in our country’s history. A perfect beach read!

ED ERHARDT
President of global sales and marketing, ESPN

“Every Town Is a Sports Town,” by George Bodenheimer
“Primates of Park Avenue,” by Wednesday Martin
“Outliers: The Story of Success,” by Malcolm Gladwell
“Isn’t That Rich? Life Among the 1%,” by Richard Kirshenbaum (the ad exec).

PETER FEIGIN
President, Milwaukee Bucks

“Good to Great,” by Jim Collins
Enjoyable to read as we road map the transformation of the Milwaukee Bucks.
“The Road to Character,” by David Brooks
Unbelievable book that connects tangible research with our everyday experiences and importance of deeper values.
“Creative Schools,” by Ken Robinson
Ken Robinson continues to push us to challenge our education system. How can we promote creative, analytical and flexible learners for the 21st century? Made me think a lot about my education and my kids’ education. Robinson also produced an incredible TED Talk on the subject.

DON CORNWELL
Partner, PJT Partners

“The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness,” by Michelle Alexander
“The Great War of Our Time: The CIA’s Fight Against Terrorism — From al Qa’ida to ISIS,” by Michael Morell
“Fight Club 2” (graphic novel), by Chuck Palahniuk
“Mo’ Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove,” by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson
“Read ’Em and Reap: A Career FBI Agent’s Guide to Decoding Poker Tells,” by Joe Navarro

ED KIERNAN
President, Engine Shop

This summer I’d love to read “King James: Believe the Hype,” by Ryan Jones, and “Jeter Unfiltered,” by Derek Jeter and Christopher Anderson. Both were presents from my 11-year-old son. In reality, I and my 3-year-old will probably only get to “Velveteen Rabbit,” by Margery Williams, the petrifying tale of a lifeless stuffed rabbit who is freed by a fairy after his owner gets scarlet fever and the parents throw him in the trash to be burned.

JONATHAN NORMAN
Vice president of strategic planning,
Bespoke Sports & Entertainment

“Go Set a Watchman,” by Harper Lee
Her book “To Kill a Mockingbird” is one of the classics, and to have an update on such a set of characters 20 years later is very intriguing.
“Riding With the Blue Moth,” by Bill Hancock
As a husband and father, this speaks to my relationship with my family. I’ve heard great things about this book.
“Why Coolidge Matters: Leadership Lessons From America’s Most Underrated President,” by Charles C. Johnson
Also happens to be the newest Nationals Racing President from our partners at the White House Historical Association.
“Smart Money, Smart Kids,” by Dave Ramsey and Rachel Cruze
Teaching financial literacy to the next generation is critical, and this father-daughter combo seems to have something very important to say.
