Forty Under 40: Nicholas Carey

Nicholas Carey

Age: 36
Company: Wells Fargo
Title: Vice president, sponsorships
Where born: London
Family: Wife, Jean; children, Brooks (4) and Margaret (1)

Favorite way to unwind: Playing with the kids or a nice long run.
Cause supported: The First Tee of Greater Charlotte. In general, The First Tee is an organization near and dear to my heart.
Most thrilling/adventurous thing I've ever done: Proposing to my wife; the adventure continues. It was dramatic: on the beach with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.
Person in the industry I'd most like to meet: Arnold Palmer. He’s the greatest.
If I could change jobs with anyone for a day, it would be: ESPN President John Skipper. Being at the helm of the most powerful force in sports media would be very interesting.
2015 will be a good year if: My family is happy and healthy, and we’ve helped measurably grow our business and the Wells Fargo brand through sponsorships.
My fellow Forty Under 40 class members would be surprised to know that I: Had a brief stint in the wine industry.

SPORTSMARK

Nicholas Carey oversees a range of deals for Wells Fargo that includes the bank’s sponsorship of MLS and its myriad agreements across college sports. But Carey didn’t always know a job in sports was in his future.

“I was never the kid that kind of knew all the batting averages and stats growing up, but I took a lot of marketing classes and majored in psychology,” Carey said.

After graduation, he got an internship at ESPN Regional in Charlotte, and something, Carey said, “flipped the switch for me.”

SBJ Podcast:
Forty Under 40 editor Mark Mensheha and Executive Editor Abraham Madkour discuss this year's class, some of the more interesting stories in it and how the selection process works.

Carey ultimately moved to San Francisco and worked for Charles Schwab, managing sponsorships. But he wanted to broaden his experience, so he joined SportsMark (now part of GMR Marketing) and handled global consulting for sponsors of the Olympics, FIFA World Cup and other large domestic sporting events. He was there for five years before joining Wells Fargo in San Francisco in 2012.

Carey counts the bank’s deal in 2013 with MLS among his biggest accomplishments. “We didn’t have any involvement in soccer and we went out and built that deal kind of from the ground up,” he said.

Carey, who now lives in Charlotte, also negotiated in 2014 Wells Fargo’s renewal of its title sponsorship deal for the annual PGA Tour stop in that city.

Said PGA Tour Deputy Commissioner Jay Monahan, Carey has been “instrumental in the success of Wells Fargo’s presence in golf.”
