STMA names ‘Field of the Year’ winners

    Since 1992, the Sports Turf Managers Association’s Field of the Year Award is given to members who manage baseball, football, soccer, softball and other sporting grounds at the professional, collegiate, and schools and parks and recreation level.
    A panel of 11 judges independently scored entries based on playability, appearance of surfaces, utilization of innovative solutions, effective use of budget and implementation of a comprehensive agronomic program.    Winning fields will be featured in a 2015 issue of Sports Turf Magazine.
The 2014 winners in the professional and collegiate categories:
Professional
Soccer: Maryland SoccerPlex Stadium Field (Boyds, Md.): Ryan Bjorn, sports field director
Collegiate
Baseball: Russ Chandler Stadium at Georgia Tech (Atlanta): Jon DeWitt, sports turf manager; Chris May, baseball field manager

ARLINGTON, TEXAS
Rangers, Papa John’s extend through 2023

The Texas Rangers and Papa John’s extended their sponsorship agreement through 2023. The partnership, established in 2011, will make Papa John’s the official pizza of the team. Papa John’s will receive digital assets, home plate signage, and English and Spanish radio spots.

AUSTIN
Spurs sign floor seating sponsor

The Austin Spurs reached a sponsorship with Dahill Office Technology Corp. that includes logo placement on the team’s court and the renaming of floor seating at Cedar Park Center to the Dahill Silver Circle. Dahill has 17 offices in Texas and New Mexico.

BLOOMINGTON, IND.
Board OKs Assembly Hall project

Indiana University’s board of trustees approved the capital improvements planned for Assembly Hall, according to an Indianapolis Star report. Work on the project, expected to cost $35 million to $40 million, will begin April 1 and could be complete in time for the 2016-17 basketball season.

DETROIT
Wings partner with PrimeSport

The Detroit Red Wings reached a partnership with PrimeSport, designating it as the official fan travel partner of the team. The deal features exclusive offers and all-inclusive packages for Red Wings fans at all road games on the team’s 2014-15 schedule.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS
Uber offering service members free rides

Uber is sponsoring this year’s Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, connecting fans with complimentary one-way rides (up to $30 value) for all armed forces ticket holders as well as discounted rides to new users attending the game. The Jan. 2 game will be played at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

GREEN BAY
Packers to name outdoor plaza

The Green Bay Packers will donate $200,000 for naming rights on an outdoor plaza to be built as part of an expanded KI Convention Center, according to a Green Bay Press-Gazette report. The outdoor area is tentatively known as Packers Plaza and would overlook Main Street.

KANSAS CITY
Royals moving to digital ticketing

The Kansas City Royals will use digital ticketing for all season-ticket accounts in 2015. Season-ticket holders will also have the ability to use the “print at home” feature for no additional cost if they prefer to print the barcodes for Kauffman Stadium gate entry.

MIAMI

Heat partners with ParkJockey
The Heat Group teamed up with ParkJockey, a free mobile application, website and parking rewards program, for all Miami Heat games and arena events. ParkJockey’s interface allows fans and event-goers to secure parking before arriving at the arena.

NASHVILLE
Titans sign STR Marketplace

The Tennessee Titans partnered with STR Marketplace to provide a new service to help fans buy and sell Tennessee Titans permanent seat licenses. Fans can sell their PSLs or buy PSLs from current Tennessee Titans season-ticket holders.

PHILADELPHIA
Union adds three to corporate roster

The Philadelphia Union formed new multiyear corporate partnerships for the 2015 season with Dogfish Head Brewery, Musselman’s and Delaware Express. Dogfish will have a new destination beer garden at PPL Park. Musselman’s will become the official applesauce of the Union, PPL Park and Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer. Delaware Express will provide the game-day shuttle from the Chester Transportation Center to PPL Park.

PHOENIX
WM reaches 10-year extension

The PGA Tour, Waste Management and tournament host The Thunderbirds reached a 10-year sponsorship extension to take effect upon completion of the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Waste Management has sponsored the tournament since 2010.

Suns sign Trapp Technology
The Phoenix Suns agreed to a multiyear partnership with Trapp Technology. Fox Sports Arizona will spotlight the Suns analytics department in two pregame features called “Inside Analytics, brought to you by Trapp Technology.” The features will debut in spring 2015.

Penguins strike a Captain pose

The Pittsburgh Penguins collaborated with Diageo to create Penguins jersey-branded bottles of Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum. The partnership includes on-site sampling opportunities, LED signage, print, radio and hospitality. Diageo receives sponsorship of Consol Energy Center’s Captain Morgan Club, a premium seating area in the arena’s lower bowl.

New trophy for New Year’s Day
The Outback Bowl has a new trophy designed and produced by Levy Marketing Awards of Tampa. It will be awarded to the champion of the Jan. 1 game at Raymond James Stadium between Auburn and Wisconsin. The all-crystal trophy is 22 inches tall and weighs 60 pounds.

Adidas on board with Euroleague

Adidas will title sponsor the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament. The competition has grown from eight teams and one city in 2003 to qualifying tournaments held across four months with at least 32 teams participating. The finals are May 14-17 in Madrid.

PYEONGCHANG, S. KOREA
Sliding events could shift to Japan

Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics organizers and two international federations are discussing the possibility of moving some luge and bobsled competitions to Japan, according to a Reuters report. Pyeongchang’s preparations have been hit by budget problems and delays in some venues.

RIO DE JANEIRO

2016 exceeding sponsorship target
Rio de Janeiro’s 2016 Olympics organizers are beating their sponsorship target by $20 million this year, boosted by Brazil’s success as host of this year’s FIFA World Cup, according to a Bloomberg report. Committee Chief Commercial Officer Renato Ciuchini said that agreements with 19 sponsors valued at $306 million will have been completed this year.

Country eyes golf, rugby, Olympics

Italy has set its sights on hosting three major international events: the Ryder Cup in 2022, the rugby World Cup in 2023 and the Olympic Games in 2024, according to a Reuters report. Rome will likely be the candidate city to stage the 2024 Olympics, 64 years after it hosted the Games for the first time.

SANTOS, BRAZIL
Pelé signs lifetime deal with Santos

Pelé signed a lifetime endorsement contract with his first professional football club, Brasileiro side Santos FC, according to a Bloomberg report. The deal allows Santos to use Pelé’s brand in promotional campaigns.
