Element puts football players on roster

Element Sports Group, the new firm formed by two agents who left SportsTrust Advisors, has signed or has commitments to represent 18 football players, including Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Cameron Heyward and Denver Broncos cornerback Bradley Roby.

All of the players, who also include Jacksonville Jaguars running back Denard Robinson and San Francisco 49ers running back Marcus Lattimore, were clients of SportsTrust Advisors when agents Michael Perrett and Kevin McGuire left to form Element.

Both Perrett and McGuire said last week that their leaving had nothing to do with any dissatisfaction with SportsTrust or its founder, veteran agent Pat Dye Jr., but rather a desire to own and build their own business.
“It’s always been a dream of ours to own our firm and our own agency,” Perrett said. “We had the utmost respect for him [Dye]. It was just a decision we had to make.”

Perrett and McGuire left in late July, and in the past few weeks the clients either completed new representation agreements with Perrett or committed to do so.

Some agent partings have resulted in lawsuits and grievances, but Perrett called the split amicable.

Asked about that, Dye said, “Naturally, when your company is heavily invested in employees and clients, you are disappointed when they leave. With Michael being the lead representative on each of the clients that left, we fully anticipated them going forward with him.”

SportsTrust still has 50 NFL clients on active rosters, including nine Pro Bowlers.

“We have been blessed with sustained success over the course of four different decades … and the rest of our great team is still here,” Dye said.

Perrett began at SportsTrust at 2002 after starting out in the business working at IMG for Tom Condon, who is now at CAA Sports. Perrett became certified by the NFL Players Association to represent players in contract talks in 2007.

McGuire began working at SportsTrust as an intern in 2005 and then full time after he graduated from law school in 2007.

McGuire was SportsTrust’s primary marketing agent, and Dye plans to fill that role.

Meanwhile, McGuire and Perrett plan to add staff at Element to turn it into a full-service football agency.

McGuire and Perrett will serve as co-founders of Element, which is based in Atlanta, like SportsTrust.
