Bulls installing new turf
The University at Buffalo is installing a new playing surface for the Bulls’ 2014 football and soccer seasons at UB Stadium. The new surface will be constructed by A-Turf Titan, which is headquartered in suburban Buffalo. Work began earlier this month. The previous turf was installed in 2005.

The Cincinnati Reds and PlusBlue Solutions have partnered to offer a charging service for fans to use with mobile devices at Great American Ball Park. The handheld chargers are available to rent on a single-game basis for $10 at the Reds Connect Zone. Charging cables for most devices are included, if needed.
City changes course on stadium bonds
Hartford city officials backed away from a proposal to issue $60 million in bonds for a new stadium for the Class AA Eastern League Rock Cats’ move from New Britain, Conn., according to a Hartford Courant report. The team is scheduled to move in 2016. Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra said the council is expected to see a new resolution for the stadium at its Aug. 11 meeting.
$1.4M gift for Special Olympics
The Knights of Columbus pledged a $1.4 million gift to support the 2015 Special Olympics World Games, which will be held next summer in Los Angeles. The Catholic organization announced its gift at an event at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum last week.

The Miami Marlins introduced a ticket offer pegged to outfielder Giancarlo Stanton’s participation in the MLB All-Star Game’s Home Run Derby last week. The offer called for fans to get $1 off Lexus Legends Platinum seating for every home run Stanton hit in the derby. With six home runs tallied, that’s a $6 discount, with a maximum of four tickets per transaction.
Dolphins sign Playmakers as print partner
Playmakers Media Corp. will serve as the exclusive print ad partner for all official Miami Dolphins publications, including the Dolphins Yearbook and Finsiders Playbook. Playmakers is also the exclusive print ad sales agency for all New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies official team publications.
Pirates partner with Westinghouse Electric
The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to a partnership with Westinghouse Electric Co. The agreement features what’s being touted as the “error-free” promotion, in which Westinghouse will donate $1,000 to United Way for each game the Pirates play without committing an error.

The inaugural Rock ’n’ Roll Raleigh Marathon & Half Marathon in April generated an economic impact of more than $8 million for the local economy, according to a study conducted by the San Diego State University Sports MBA program. The event filled 7,444 room nights for Raleigh hotels, which translated into $363,107 in taxes and other tourism-related fees.
Sharks proceeding with ‘ice girls’
The San Jose Sharks last week were not backing down from their plan to recruit “ice girls” to help clean the playing surface during games despite a backlash from a segment of their fan base, according to a San Jose Mercury News report. The Sharks defended their decision, saying the on-ice crew will include men and women.

Job numbers revealed for stadium
Levi’s Stadium will create about 12,000 jobs, but the vast majority are temporary construction jobs or part-time service jobs on game days, according to an Oakland Tribune report. On event days, the San Francisco 49ers’ new stadium is expected to employ about 4,500 people. About 60 jobs at the stadium will provide permanent, full-time employment, according to the report.
Tailgate section gets Mina treatment
Celebrity chef Michael Mina will have a year-round restaurant at Levi’s Stadium with a parking lot that will turn into a tailgate section on game days, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report. The tailgate is available to Levi’s Stadium stadium building license holders and will feature a five-course menu and all-inclusive
Toyota titling Frozen Dome Classic
Toyota, already the official car of the AHL Syracuse Crunch, was named title sponsor of the Frozen Dome Classic to be held in the Carrier Dome on Nov. 22. Additionally, the Crunch recently introduced the event logo. It was designed by team and local graphic designer Steve Luczka. The game, featuring the Crunch and the Utica (N.Y.) Comets, will be the first pro hockey game played in the dome.

TV deals reached in Games’ nations
Commonwealth Games organizers said television deals have been secured with broadcasters in each of the 71 competing nations and territories, according to a Herald Scotland report. Additional deals were reached for fans in the United States and China for the games, which begin this week.
Spurs get green light for new ground
Tottenham Hotspur’s plans to build a 58,000-capacity stadium on a site next to its White Hart Lane home is set to proceed after government approval, according to a Reuters report. The Spurs, which have played at White Hart Lane since 1899, hope to move into the new ground in 2017.
ATP, Lacoste renew partnership
The ATP announced a two-year renewal of its partnership with fashion brand Lacoste. The brand will continue to dress the line judges at the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at The O2 in London through 2015.
Man U tickets sell out in record time
Manchester United sold all 55,000 season tickets in record time ahead of new manager Louis van Gaal’s arrival in England last week, according to a (London) Daily Mail report. It is the earliest Man U has reached this point since its Old Trafford stadium was expanded to 76,000 capacity in 2006.
Portuguese club FC Porto developed a graphic design to mark its new partnership with shoe brand New Balance. The design features the phrase “Same Flame, New Balance.”
Azerbaijan lands on Sheffield kits
League Championship club Sheffield United announced a new shirt sponsorship with Azerbaijan. The club’s home and away shirts will feature the Azerbaijan “land of fire” logo. The shirt deal is independent of Azerbaijani Hafiz Mammadov’s ongoing takeover of the club.
