CBSSN partners on Veterans Classic

CBS Sports Network partnered with the U.S. Naval Academy to create the Veterans Classic at the Naval Academy, which will be held annually through 2017, according to a report in The (Annapolis) Capital. The inaugural basketball event takes place Nov. 14 with Tennessee-VCU and Michigan State-Navy. Navy will host and participate in every Veterans Classic with the other three teams changing from each year.

ARLINGTON, TEXAS
Rangers open summer reading program

The 2014 Texas Rangers Summer Reading Program held its kickoff event last week at the George W. Hawkes Central Library. Twenty-five libraries in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are participating in the program. The honorary spokesman of the club is Rangers catcher Geovany Soto.

Rangers plan Korean-themed night
The Rangers will host the first Korean American Heritage Night at Globe Life Park on July 11 when the club hosts the Los Angeles Angels. The event is being organized in conjunction with the Korean Society of Dallas and News Korea Texas.

Golfers crack crabs with Cal
The LPGA hosted an event at Phillips Seafood in Baltimore recently to celebrate the upcoming International Crown Tournament, which will be held July 24-27 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. Four LPGA professionals participated in a Q&A, in addition to trying their hand at cracking Maryland steamed crabs.

BOSTON
NBCSN to televise Liverpool-AS Roma

NBC Sports Network will televise the Liverpool-AS Roma soccer match July 23 at Fenway Park. Coverage begins with a half-hour pre-match show at 7 p.m. The two clubs have met previously at Fenway, playing in front of more than 37,000 fans on July 25, 2012.

CLEVELAND
Cavs’ in-game video wins Emmy

The Cleveland Cavaliers took home an Emmy at the 45th annual Lower Great Lakes Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Emmy Awards on June 7 at the Cleveland Convention Center. The Cavs’ in-house QTV production team won in the category for Best Promotion of Program Sports for the Cavs’ 2013-14 in-game video open.

DAYTONA, FLA.
Speedway’s new seats on sale

Grandstand tickets for the 2015 Daytona 500 went on sale last week, and the offering includes 40,000 seats on the west end of Daytona Rising, according to a Daytona Beach News-Journal report. Spectators who buy seats in the new section will have first choice of seats for Budweiser Speedweeks 2016 when the project is completed, according to the report.

DENVER
Noble Energy signs with Broncos

Noble Energy, a Houston natural gas and oil producer, signed an agreement with the Denver Broncos. The company plans to recognize students who excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics on game days at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Noble Energy will have naming rights to the Sports Legends Mall, a fan interactive experience near the Ring of Fame monuments.

EVANSTON, ILL.
NU tripling video board displays

Northwestern University announced upgrades to the in-stadium video display capabilities in Ryan Field, with plans to nearly triple the size of the existing video board and install new LED ribbon boards overlooking both the north and south end zones. The video boards are expected to be in place ahead of NU’s football home opener against Cal on Aug. 30.

Soccer crowd breaks record
The announced crowd of 52,033 for the U.S. men’s national soccer team’s June 7 friendly against Nigeria at EverBank Field is a record for a men’s soccer match in the Southeast, according to a Florida Times-Union report. The U.S. team has made five appearances in Jacksonville, dating to 1994 at Wolfson Park.

Red Wolves getting Daktronics upgrades

Arkansas State University partnered with Daktronics to make improvements to Centennial Bank Stadium. Approximately 1,600 square feet of LED video display will be added to the south end zone along with a custom audio system, delay-of-game clocks and locker room clocks.

Centerplate signs partnership

Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course teamed up with Centerplate to offer event catering, retail food and beverage sales and hospitality services during all events at the Ohio track. As part of the long-term partnership, Centerplate will handle all on-site food services, in retail food and beverage and hospitality chalets and suites.

MIAMI
Poll: Voters split on MLS stadium

Voters are evenly divided over David Beckham’s proposal for an MLS stadium, according to poll data cited in a Miami Herald report. A poll conducted by Bendixen & Amandi International among 400 respondents shows that voters by a 45 percent to 43 percent margin were against the idea to build a 20,000-seat stadium on the waterfront.

NEW YORK
Mets game goes commercial-free on SNY

SportsNet New York’s first limited commercial interruption telecast occurred last week with a Milwaukee Brewers-New York Mets game. Verizon bought the presenting sponsorship around the June 12 “Mets+” game. Instead of commercial breaks, SNY filled time with highlights, interviews, taped segments and analysis.

Rangers, hospital dressing newborns
New York Rangers sponsor Lenox Hill Hospital gave the first 100 newborn babies that arrived during Stanley Cup Final games at Madison Square Garden a “Welcome to Rangerstown” onesie. The team’s official hospital also gave out a onesie each day of the series via its Twitter feed.

Cyclones installing Chair of Honor
The Brooklyn Cyclones are partnering with the New York chapters of Rolling Thunder to have a Chair of Honor at MCU Park. The front-row seat, which will be painted black and feature the POW / MIA emblem, will remain unoccupied in perpetuity in honor of the more than 80,000 American soldiers who have gone missing in action.

Flyers reach affiliation with Royals

The Reading (Pa.) Royals of the ECHL reached an affiliation agreement with the Philadelphia Flyers. For the past two seasons, the Royals had a partnership with the Washington Capitals. The Flyers’ ECHL affiliate last season was the Greenville (S.C.) Road Warriors. Before that, the Flyers and the now-defunct Trenton (N.J.) Titans of the ECHL were partners.

Penguins sign TeamSnap as sponsor

TeamSnap is a Web-based management tool for organizing sports team participation.
TeamSnap will serve as a sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Penguins Hockey Development during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 NHL seasons. More than 60 percent of TeamSnap’s customers are using the company’s mobile app to schedule games, see player availability, track stats and make payments.

Brooks renews 3 Point partnership

3 Point Productions renewed its partnership with Brooks Running to produce event presentation at the Brooks PR Invitational on June 21. The track meet will feature the top high school runners from across the nation and take place at the newly renovated Renton Memorial Stadium.

Red Star banned from Champions
Serbian SuperLiga side Red Star Belgrade was banned from next season’s Champions League for failing to pay its debts, according to a BBC report. UEFA said in a statement that the Serbian champions were in breach of a number of provisions of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play regulations.

FRANKFURT
FSV Frankfurt, retailer extend deal
Second Bundesliga club FSV Frankfurt extended its partnership with online tool and machine retailer Werkzeugstore24 for another year through June 2015. The online retailer has been a partner of the club since the second half of the 2013-14 season.

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND
Games drains back-up fund
Commonwealth Games organizers could be forced to dip into an emergency Scottish Government fund after draining their own $77 million back-up cash supply, according to a Scotsman report. The official cost of the Games is said to stand at $945 million.

Cricket ground plans $84M project

The club will work in partnership with Leeds Rugby and DLA Architecture.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club has drawn up a 20-year master plan to redevelop Headingley cricket ground in a project costing around $84 million, according to a Yorkshire Evening Post report. The plan includes a new state-of-the-art pavilion and a new shared stand with the adjoining rugby ground.

WTA board OKs new event
The WTA Board of Directors approved a new international-level grass court event in Mallorca set to make its debut on the WTA calendar two years from now. The event will be staged by E|motion Management GmbH at a multipurpose facility, the C’an Angeli tennis complex.

Man U gains Asia visibility
Manchester United reached a multiyear sponsorship deal with Korean Pharmaceutical company Cho-A Pharm to become the team’s official pharmaceuticals partner in Korea and Vietnam. The partnership will see club imagery placed on Cho-A Pharm’s range of products.

MELBOURNE
Australian Open to have third roof

Margaret Court Arena will have a retractable roof in time for the 2015 Australian Open.

The Australian Open will add a third retractable roof for the 2015 tennis tournament, according to a Bloomberg report. The new roof will be built at 7,300-seat Margaret Court Arena. The courts at Rod Laver and Hisense arenas already have roofs at Melbourne’s Grand Slam tournament.

PARIS
Fries producer signs with Tour
McCain, the largest producer of frozen french fries in France, signed a three-year deal to become an official supplier of the Tour de France, according to a Le Figaro report. This year’s tour will start on July 5 in England.

ITV retains Open through 2018
ITV extended its free-to-air coverage of the French Open until 2018. The channel has held the rights to show the tournament since 2012. ITV will continue to broadcast comprehensive coverage each year, with a guaranteed minimum of 90 hours devoted to each tournament across its main channel and ITV4.

SHANGHAI
Laureus Sports Awards on calendar
Laureus Sports Awards chairman Edwin Moses said that the 2015 edition of the event will be staged in Shanghai, according to a PTI report. The proceeds from the Laureus World Sports Academy supports more than 150 community sports projects in 34 countries, including China.

VIENNA
Allianz naming new stadium
Allianz acquired the naming rights for the new stadium of Austrian Bundesliga football club Rapid Vienna, according to an ORF report. The new stadium, which is expected to open in 2016 and replace the club’s current ground, Gerhard-Hanappi Stadium, will be named Allianz Stadium.
