Rangers roll out military verification

The Texas Rangers and GovX launched an online verification ticketing program for U.S. military service members and government first responders as part of an overall MLB initiative. Previously, fans had to show proof of military or government identification in person at the box office. GovX is also a sponsor of Military Appreciation Night at Rangers Ballpark on Sept. 11.

AUSTIN, TEXAS
Longhorns riding with Silverado

The University of Texas agreed to a deal with General Motors designating the Chevrolet Silverado as the official truck of the Texas Longhorns and of the Texas Exes: The Ex-Students’ Association of the University of Texas. The Silverado will also serve as the official truck of Bevo, the school’s live mascot.

BALTIMORE
UA ends running fest sponsorship

Under Armour ended its long-standing title sponsorship of the Baltimore Running Festival. Event organizer Lee Corrigan said that Under Armour founder, chairman and CEO Kevin Plank told him the company plans to use the resources to help other areas of Baltimore, such as building youth athletic fields. UA had been the title sponsor of the event since 2003.

BUFFALO
Bills partner with hotel for games

The Buffalo Bills reached a deal with Ellicott Hospitality Co. for its Wyndham Garden Hotel & Residences at the Mosey to be the team hotel for all home games. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The pact also calls for Ellicott at each home game to award one row of fans in Ralph Wilson Stadium with gift certificates to one of its properties.

Bulls to reach more listeners on radio
The University at Buffalo will have several football and men’s basketball games broadcast this season live on Bloomberg Radio in New York City. As many as seven football games and a select number of basketball games will be heard on WBBR-AM 1130, a 50,000-watt radio station serving New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The initiative is part of the UB athletic department’s effort to market the Bulls across New York state.

Bark by popular demand: Puppypalooza
Puppypalooza returns to Progressive Field on Sept. 9. The promotion lets fans bring their dogs to the ballpark for that night’s Cleveland Indians game against Kansas City. The event debuted in 2010 and is once again being offered in partnership with the Cleveland Animal Protective League. The first 300 owners and dogs (300-dog maximum) can participate in an on-field parade during pregame ceremonies, as well.

HOUSTON
Texans to implement new Skyview system

The Houston Texans will be the first of Skyview Networks’ partners to implement the company’s AdView Inventory Management system, which will let the team manage all 27 of its radio and television shows in one system. The partnership aims to increase control over inventory by providing access to advertising logs from anywhere an Internet connection is available.

Scully will return in 2014
Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully will return to the Los Angeles Dodgers broadcast booth for an unprecedented 65th season in 2014. Scully will again call all Dodgers home games and road games in California and Arizona.

LOUISVILLE
Track appealing to college crowd

College students are invited to Churchill Downs on Saturday as the track is transformed into Downs After Dark: College Rivalry Night, presented by Finlandia Vodka. Churchill Downs will award $10,000 in scholarships as part of the effort. Each fan who passes through the admission gates will be asked which collegiate team he or she supports, and at night’s end, the school with the most votes will be awarded $5,000 in scholarships. The runner-up will receive $3,000 in grants, while the third-place finisher will get $2,000.

MIAMI
BankUnited names Dolphins’ club level

The Miami Dolphins have sold naming rights to their club level at Sun Life Stadium to BankUnited, according to a Miami Herald report. The 10,000-seat premium area is now called the BankUnited Club Level. Financial terms of the deal were not released, but the agreement will run between five and seven years, according to the report.

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL
Twins keep freeze on ticket prices

The Minnesota Twins will hold ticket prices steady for the third straight year. In 2014, season-ticket holders also will receive priority to purchase All-Star Summer Event ticket strips, early access to the ballpark to watch batting practice, and the opportunity to participate in a new ticket-exchange program allowing fans to exchange tickets for games they are unable to attend.

Taste of Target Field truck debuts
The Twins and Delaware North Sportservice launched a food truck last week in downtown Minneapolis. The Taste of Target Field truck features sausages from Kramarczuk’s, hot dogs from Schweigert, chili from The Loon Café and cheese curds, all products available at Target Field. The truck also is equipped with an audio and video system that can broadcast Twins games.

YES showing Man City programming

YES Network reached a multiyear agreement with Manchester City to televise its games in HD on tape delay. As part of the deal, YES also will televise the “CityLife” and “Inside City” magazine shows, which provide behind-the-scenes insights into the EPL club and its players off the pitch, while also reporting team news.

OAKLAND

A’s plan Korach book signings
The Oakland A’s, in conjunction with Wellstone Books, are marking the official release of Ken Korach’s new book, “Holy Toledo — Lessons from Bill King: Renaissance Man of the Mic,” by staging book-signing sessions at O.co Coliseum prior to the final three games of the A’s series with Houston this week. Korach has been the voice of the A’s since 2006 and was King’s broadcast partner from 1996 through 2005. King died in 2005.

A’s extend affiliation with Ports
The A’s extended their player development contract with the Class A Stockton Ports through 2016. Prior to this new two-year extension, the A’s and Ports had signed a two-year agreement in April 2010 for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

D-Backs rename office space

The Arizona Diamondbacks rebranded their physical front office as the D-Backs Culture & Innovation Center. The first phase of the dedication opened in the lobby to the team’s offices at Chase Field, with additional phases planned. Four HD digital boards with rotating content welcome guests as they enter the rebranded space.

SACRAMENTO
Kings pick AECOM

The Sacramento Kings selected AECOM as the architect for their planned new downtown arena. AECOM joins project manager Icon Venue Group and lead builder Turner Construction for the work. Conceptual renderings for the arena are expected to be released this fall, with a final arena design by spring.

SAN ANTONIO
Bowl partners with PrimeSport

PrimeSport was named the official fan hospitality provider for the Valero Alamo Bowl. PrimeSport will be offering official ticket and hospitality packages for the Dec. 30 game at the Alamodome. The annual bowl game — with five sellouts in the last seven years — pits top-ranked teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences.

WesBanco adds 10 years to arena deal

WesBanco renewed its naming-rights agreement for the WesBanco Arena for an additional 10 years. The contract will provide more than $2.5 million for the arena over the life of the agreement. The arena is home to the ECHL Wheeling Nailers and the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference wrestling tournament.

Spanish Soccer School to open doors

Dubai Sports City last week launched its Spanish Soccer School under Michel Salgado, director of football, according to a Gulf News report. The mission of the coaching team is to teach youngsters to play in the fluid quick-passing style of Spain. The first term of the Spanish Soccer Schools starts Sept. 15.

GALWAY, IRELAND
Rugby team partners with Kinetica

Irish rugby side Connacht Rugby partnered with sports nutrition brand Kinetica. The collaboration will see Kinetica produce and supply a wide range of nutritional products to the senior Connacht squad for the next three years.

Freezers, Philips add four years
German Hockey League club Hamburg Freezers extended its partnership with electronics company Philips for another four years. The deal, which will run until 2017, includes ad space on the ice near the face-off circles, a 13-meter ad board and a projection on the ice during the player-intro show.

Team extends online media deal
Bundesliga club Hamburg SV extended its partnership with online sports broadcaster Laola1.tv for another four years. The company, on behalf of Deutsche Telekom, has been in charge of the club’s website since 2009. Laola1.tv optimized the website in terms of user friendliness ahead of the 2013-14 season.

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND
Olympic committee chooses Lausanne

The Swiss Olympic executive committee officially put forward Lausanne as its potential candidate to host the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games. Lausanne beat Lucerne, which also bid to host the Games, 8-4 with one abstention. The final decision will be made by representatives of Switzerland’s Olympic sports federations on Sept. 19.

   Future Olympics could have fewer athletes and medals after International Olympic Committee presidential candidate Ng Ser Miang said that a review of the cost and size of the Games will be a priority if he wins this month’s vote, according to a Reuters report. The 64-year-old Singaporean also said that he would look into scaling back the cost and procedures for cities bidding to host the Olympics and suggested potential new sports should use the Youth Games as a test ground before seeking inclusion.
   Ng: “It is also about time for us to do a major review of the size, the cost, the scale and the complexity of the Games.” Ng is up against Germany’s Thomas Bach, Richard Carrión of Puerto Rico, Wu Ching-kuo of Taiwan, Denis Oswald of Switzerland and Ukraine’s former Olympic pole vault champion Sergey Bubka to replace outgoing Belgian Jacques Rogge in the Sept. 10 vote in Argentina.

New TV camera blocking views

Fulham FC supporters expressed their anger at the first home game of the season after a new TV camera position restricted views in the main Johnny Haynes Stand of Craven Cottage, according to a (London) Daily Mail report. The camera, required as part of the new TV deal, was installed in front of the press box and season-ticket holders who pay in the region of $1,200 for their seats.

Man U reports record sales

Manchester United claimed a record 63,000 in season-ticket sales, according to a Press Association report. The figure is made up of 55,000 actual season tickets, as many as the club makes available, plus an additional 8,000 hospitality packages.

MUMBAI
3-on-3 tourney welcomes ex-NBAers

Former NBA players Horace Grant, Ron Harper and Peja Stojakovic will participate in NBA Jam in India this month. The event starts this week in Hyderabad and will feature the largest 3-on-3 tournament ever held in India. The national finals in Mumbai on Sept. 29 will be televised on Sony Six, India’s NBA broadcast partner.

Euro Tour adds match-play event

The EurAsia Cup, a new match-play event between Europe and Asia, will be part of the initial sector of the 2014 European Tour international schedule, which was unveiled last week. Taking place at Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in Malaysia from March 28-30, the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM will pit 10 of Europe’s leading players against a 10-man team from Asia in a format similar to the Ryder Cup.

Governor rebuffs radiation criticism
Tokyo Gov. Naoki Inose said that radiation levels in Tokyo are no different from those of other major world cities and the worsening crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant should have no impact on the city’s bid to host the 2020 Olympics, according to a Reuters report. Inose said that he was confident the problem would be resolved.
