UNM going big with LED display

Branch Field at University Stadium is getting the largest single LED video display in the Mountain West Conference. The display, measuring 32 feet high by 80 feet wide, is being designed and manufactured by Daktronics and will be installed in August.

TexasTweetUp back for second year

The Texas Rangers’ 2013 Social Media Weekend during their coming series against Cincinnati will be highlighted by the return of #TexasTweetUp on Saturday. ATLANTA
Hawks ready for new flagship station

CBS Radio’s SportsRadio 92.9 The Game (WZGC-FM) will become the official flagship station of the Atlanta Hawks on July 1. As part of a multiyear agreement, the station will broadcast all Hawks regular-season and postseason games, along with pregame and postgame shows, and will create dedicated Hawks programming.
 
BOSTON
Bruins eye facility at New Balance

The Boston Bruins are exploring plans to open a practice facility at the massive sports complex being developed by New Balance along the Massachusetts Turnpike in Brighton, Mass., according to sources cited in a Boston Globe report. Construction is expected to start on the New Balance property this year, according to the report.

One Run For Boston nears finish
One Run For Boston, a coast-to-coast, nonstop, 3,000-mile relay race, began June 7 in Los Angeles and is scheduled to conclude Sunday in Boston, close to where the Boston Marathon bombings occurred. There are more than 300 segments to the race, with each being run by an individual or a group.

JACKSONVILLE
Levy tries brunch at EverBank Field

Levy Restaurants, concessionaire for premium spaces at EverBank Field, hosted a Father’s Day brunch in the stadium’s Terrace Suite, according to a Florida Times-Union report. Levy sales manager Ashley Stadt said the brunch was the first public event of its kind held at the Terrace Suite and that Levy is considering similar events for New Year’s Eve and next year’s Mother’s Day.

MIAMI
Heat wants to rework subsidies deal

The Miami Heat began talks to rework a deal for public subsidies at AmericanAirlines Arena in exchange for a longer lease and an upgrade of the 13-year-old facility, according to a Miami Herald report. Miami-Dade County pays the arena $6.4 million a year under a deal that runs through 2029.

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL
UM regents OK capital projects

The University of Minnesota Board of Regents approved more than $110 million in capital projects for the coming school year, according to a St. Paul Pioneer Press report. The projects include $6.6 million in improvements to TCF Bank Stadium funded by the Minnesota Vikings, who will play in the stadium for their 2014 and 2015 seasons while their new NFL stadium is built.

NASHVILLE
Preds to manage rinks at new complex

Nashville is building a community ice rink and hockey center in southeast Davidson County as part of a public-private partnership with Metro Sports Authority and the Nashville Predators. The $32 million mixed-use complex will also include an expanded branch library, a new regional community center and a park. The Predators will manage the two ice rinks in the 86,000-square-foot hockey center that will be available for the community and for youth hockey programs.

Cosmos home games on One World

The New York Cosmos reached an agreement for the team’s home games to be aired in high definition on One World Sports when the franchise debuts for the 2013 NASL fall season. The team is scheduled to begin play Aug. 3, hosting Fort Lauderdale at Hofstra University’s James M. Shuart Stadium.

Suns promote ‘Predict the Picks’
The Phoenix Suns launched a draft contest called “Predict the Picks” that will reward one fan with two 2013-14 memberships to the Suns’ SixthMan benefits program as well as two tickets to every concert and family show at US Airways Center for one year, beginning July 1. The contest calls for fans to predict the top five picks for this year’s draft from a list of 15 total draft prospects. The Suns own the No. 5 overall pick in this year’s draft, which is scheduled for Thursday night.

Free day at ballpark for military, vets

Complimentary tickets are being offered to active duty military personnel and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces for the Pittsburgh Pirates’ July 4 game against Philadelphia. The Pirates and GovX.com, a website for military, law enforcement and first responders, partnered to provide the experience at PNC Park.

Jazz upgrading audio, video system

The screens above center court will be 42 feet long and 24 feet high on the sidelines.

The Utah Jazz revealed plans for an upgraded audio and video system at EnergySolutions Arena, including upgraded high-definition screens above center court and LED rings around the top of the lower bowl, according to a Salt Lake Tribune report. The upgrades are part of $15 million in renovations at the venue. The Jazz partnered with Utah-based Yesco on the project.

Panasonic supplying America’s Cup

Panasonic will be an official supplier of the 34th America’s Cup, providing five LED video boards and 85 flat-panel TVs throughout the America’s Cup Park and America’s Cup Village. The first of the Cup matches, which will see Oracle take on the winner of the challenger series, is scheduled for Sept. 7.

Local talent opening ‘Cup’ sports bar
San Francisco restaurant veterans Eric Rubin and Karl Hasz have been tapped to open what has been dubbed the America’s Cup Sports Bar. Opening July 4 in the America’s Cup Village, the 12,000-square-foot bar will accommodate up to 500 people with both indoor and outdoor seating, as well as private lounge areas and event spaces.

49ers reach deal with Yahoo

The San Francisco 49ers reached a 10-year deal that makes Yahoo the sports content, social networking, and photo/video sharing partner for both the team and Levi’s Stadium, opening in 2014. Yahoo’s sponsorship assets will include title sponsorship and branding of the venue’s Fantasy Football lounge and its two adjacent viewing platforms in the stadium’s suite tower.

Track welcomes Advance, Fifth Third

Kentucky Speedway added Advance Auto Parts to its family of corporate partners, with the company becoming presenting sponsor of this Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Quaker State 400 at the track. Additionally, Fifth Third Bank signed on as the preferred bank of the facility and will activate with Kids Zone activities at the facility during race weekend.

ST. LOUIS
Rams to open youth academy

The St. Louis Rams reached a partnership with Elite Football to open a youth training academy in suburban Chesterfield, Mo. The 20,000-square-foot indoor facility will feature video analysis labs, a turf field and an Olympic-style weight room. The facility will host six weeks of football camps and various NFL Play 60 events annually. A merchandise and ticket outlet in the facility will be open year-round.

Bullets’ ‘history’ will be considered

A top Washington Wizards executive said the team probably will not return to using the franchise’s former Bullets nickname, despite fan interest, but it might incorporate the moniker with the team to some degree. Joe Dupriest, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at team parent company Monumental Sports & Entertainment, said recently: “I don’t see us changing the name to the Bullets, but I see us using the Bullets with the Wizards mark and using that history a lot more.”
