MainGate doing retail for COTA

Circuit of the Americas and MainGate reached an exclusive retail merchandise agreement. MainGate launched COTA-store.com last month and will create a complete line of apparel and novelties for the Circuit over the next year. MainGate will manage retail sales at several Circuit events.

BALTIMORE
Hospital, foundation saving Ruth field

Saint Agnes Hospital and the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation are teaming up to save the field on which Babe Ruth played as a young man. The partnership is part of Saint Agnes’ vision for the former site of Cardinal Gibbons School, which the hospital purchased from the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 2012.

BUFFALO
Bills renew with PrimeSport

The Buffalo Bills will continue to partner with PrimeSport to offer official fan packages for all of the team’s 2013 home and away games. PrimeSport also is offering fan packages for all home and away games that include game tickets, a PrimeSport ticket holder and lanyard, merchandise gift cards, and hotel and rental car discounts.

Bills partner with official dip, milk
The Bills reached a partnership with Upstate Niagara, a dairy food and beverage cooperative featuring Bison Dip and Intense Milk. As part of the agreement, Bison Dip will become the official dip of the Bills, while Intense Milk becomes the official milk.

Teams ready for carbon-neutral sailing
Seven teams will set sail in the 2013 Atlantic Cup from Charleston on Saturday. The six U.S. teams and one Great Britain team will head to New York Harbor for events May 14-17 and then sail to Newport, R.I., for inshore racing May 25-26. The third annual race stresses carbon-neutral competition by using biodiesel, hydro-generators, solar and fuel cells to limit fuel use during competition.

HOUSTON
Texans, BHP reach 5-year deal

The Houston Texans, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and BHP Billiton Petroleum reached a five-year sponsorship agreement. BHP will name the northeast gate at Reliant Stadium. The agreement also includes presenting sponsorship of the Texans’ “Liberty White” home game and the Texans Community Quarterback Program.

KANSAS CITY
Royals app includes upgrade feature

The Kansas City Royals and fan experience technology company Experience partnered to deliver seat upgrade technology as part of MLB.com’s At the Ballpark free app. After downloading the free At the Ballpark app, fans can select Kauffman Stadium as their venue of choice and follow the steps needed for seat changes.

Boston greats at Braves game

Atlanta Falcons and former Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, former Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek, former New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison and former Boston Celtics guard Dee Brown will all be on hand for first pitches at Coolray Field on Tuesday as the Gwinnett Braves host “Boston Strong Night.” A portion of online ticket sales will benefit victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

LOUISVILLE, KY.
DAS installed at Churchill Downs

Churchill Downs partnered with Mobilitie and AT&T to install a new distributed antenna system. The project involved more than 100 small antennas and about 35,000 feet of fiber, some of which was buried or hidden out of view to maintain the facility’s traditional look.

NEW YORK
Garden plans new suite level

Madison Square Garden will have a new Signature Suite Level on the ninth floor of the arena that will debut this fall as part of the final phase of the Garden’s three-year renovation. The new level will feature a 2,180-square-foot window-lined lobby with a collection of memorabilia that pays homage to legendary athletes and entertainers.

PHILADELPHIA

Sixers buy D-League team

The Philadelphia 76ers purchased the rights to own and operate an NBA D-League team that will begin play in the 2013-14 season in Newark, Del. The team will be called the 87ers, in recognition of Delaware’s history as the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1787. The rights to the D-League team were previously held by the Utah Flash, which went on hiatus two seasons ago.
 
Union ponders PPL Park expansion
The owners of the Philadelphia Union are discussing plans for a possible expansion of 18,500-seat PPL Park. The stadium was designed to allow for expansion to accommodate 30,000 people. Team officials said they are considering adding a second restaurant and additional club seating, plus up to 10 additional suites.

Freedoms offer premium packages
The Philadelphia Freedoms of World TeamTennis are introducing a new program this season geared to small business owners. The packages, priced at $795 and $1,350, include premium courtside seats for four people for either four or seven matches. The Freedoms’ home games are July 10-28.

Diamondbacks have new dog
The Arizona Diamondbacks will offer a Sonoran-style hot dog at every home game. The team partnered with Univision to offer a special package, El Pa’quetellenes, for $15 that includes a game ticket, hot dog, Pepsi and a cookie. El Pa’quetellenes can be purchased online at www.losdbacks.com. The hot dog alone is priced at $7. The Sonoran Dog originated in Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora, Mexico, and is traditionally found in Phoenix, Tucson and Sonora.

Marathon medal voted No. 1

A panel of 25 judges commissioned by Marathon & Beyond named the Portland Marathon finishers medal tops among 705 marathons held in North America last year. Always Advancing produces the medals for the Portland event, to be held this year on Oct. 6.

SAN ANTONIO
Student groups awarded $20K prizes

Silver & Black Give Back awarded five student-led groups $20,000 each as Champions of the 2012-13 Team Up Challenge. Last fall, 20 Team Up Challenge semifinalists received $2,500 to begin their service learning projects to improve the community. Silver & Black Give Back is a public charity that invests in the community in partnership with the Spurs Sports & Entertainment family of teams.

Great Clips renews at raceway

Great Clips will be title sponsor of the Great Clips Fast Friday qualifying event at the Toyota/Save Mart 350 practice day June 21. Great Clips also will continue as the official hair salon of Sonoma Raceway for the second consecutive year.

‘NASCAR Express’ to deliver fans
Sonoma Raceway partnered with the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority to offer a first-of-its-kind express train that will transport fans directly from the Sacramento area to the Toyota/Save Mart 350 on June 23. The NASCAR Express train will depart from Sacramento, with stops in Davis and Suisun City.

Rays, foundation put reports online

The Tampa Bay Rays and the Rays Baseball Foundation launched an interactive, Web-based report of the Rays and Rays Baseball Foundation’s community impact initiatives that took place over the 2012 calendar year. The site (raysbaseball.com/communityreport) shows the combined efforts of the team’s organizational outreach programs with the efforts of the team’s charity.

Sports retailer plans Morocco outlets
Sporting goods retailer Intersport International is about to move into its 43rd market, Morocco. Intersport granted a sublicense for the Moroccan market to Intersport Spain, according to an ISPO report. The Spanish group formed a joint venture with local partner Iska Management. The first of several shops is planned for Casablanca by the end of this year.

DORTMUND, GERMANY
Turkish Airlines partners with club
Turkish Airlines agreed a new premium partnership deal with Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, according to a Soccerex report. The team and airline will work together on a range of joint activities and programs over the next three years.

DUSSELDORF, GERMANY
Team repays $9.8 million loan
Bundesliga club Fortuna Dusseldorf repaid a loan of $9.8 million that it received in 1999 from businessman Michael Kölmel, according to a Der Westen report. The club reportedly used profits from the current season to repay the loan. The club started repaying the loan in August 2008.

FREIBURG, GERMANY
Club finds space for new stadium
Bundesliga club SC Freiburg found a location for its new stadium and construction could start as early as 2016, according to a Badische Zeitung report. The new stadium, which could have as many as 35,000 seats, will be built in close proximity to the city’s airfield.

Museum enjoys strong visitor numbers
National Football Museum bosses in Manchester said that they feel vindicated after it smashed its annual visitor target in the space of nine months, according to a Manchester Evening News report. More than 350,000 people have visited since it opened in July, more than three times the visitors in its former home of Preston.

Man City partners with tech startup
Manchester City partnered with Gaga Sports & Entertainment, a Bay Area technology startup specializing in social media consumer research, to create tools for its global fan development efforts. Using Gaga’s social CRM platform, Man City has begun to post geographically targeted online fan contests and quizzes.

MILAN
UEFA fines Inter Milan $59K
Serie A club Inter Milan was fined $59,000 by UEFA for the racist behavior of its fans, according to a Reuters report. The game in question was a Europa League last 16 second-leg match at home to Tottenham Hotspur in March.

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA
Hoops league launching with sponsors
Cambodia’s only official basketball league is set to launch June 1, according to Phnom Penh Post report. Western Union will title sponsor the first season, and Coca-Cola is one of the leading co-sponsors.

SÃO PAULO
Allianz to name Nova Arena
Allianz reached a 20-year naming-rights deal with Nova Arena, the stadium currently under construction for Brazilian soccer club Palmeiras. The venue can hold 45,000 fans for soccer and 60,000 for concerts. Allianz launched an online vote for fans to pick the venue’s new name from three choices: Allianz Parque, Allianz Center or Allianz 360.

Ganassi, Lexar renew partnership
Target Chip Ganassi Racing and Lexar renewed a partnership that will see a primary paint scheme for a second season on the No. 10 Honda of Dario Franchitti. The No. 10 Lexar Honda debuted May 5 in the Itaipava São Paulo Indy 300.

Businessmen tap mining company
Mining company Norilsk Nickel will put money into a ski resort and the Olympic village being built by its billionaire backers, Vladimir Potanin and Oleg Deripaska, in return for stakes in the two projects, according to a Reuters report.

TEHRAN, IRAN
Airline supports national soccer team
Aseman Airlines signed a two-year traveling sponsorship agreement with the Iranian soccer team, according to a Tehran Times report. The airline will fly the team to Doha, Qatar, and Seoul, South Korea, in World Cup qualifiers. The team will reportedly sport the airline’s logo on warmup uniforms.

TOKYO
Governor sorry for bid-related comments
Tokyo Gov. Naoki Inose, who heads the city’s bid for the 2020 Olympics, apologized for  comments he made about rival candidate Istanbul and Islamic countries, according to a Reuters report. The remarks, made in a recent New York Times interview, prompted the IOC to investigate.
