Cyclones upgrade streaming quality

Daktronics helped Iowa State University upgrade their video production capabilities beyond in-venue video displays. The Cyclones can now stream sporting events online to the university’s website, Cyclones.tv, with broadcast quality.

Rangers select Nolan Ryan

Nolan Ryan’s All-Natural Beef was selected as the exclusive hot dog and official beef provider for Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Additionally, Nolan Ryan Beef will now sponsor the popular $1 Hot Dog Night promotion held on select Wednesday home games.

Multiple names on Stampede jerseys

The Idaho Stampede reached a partnership with St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute and Boise’s AuctionFrogs.org to help raise money for the mammography assistance fund called “The 2nd Annual Real Men Wear Pink Night.”  The NBA D-League team will wear special jerseys Friday and Saturday that feature names of friends and family members of Stampede fans to raise awareness of people affected by cancer.

Francona book on shelves

Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona’s new book, “Francona: The Red Sox Years,” hit the shelves last week. The book is published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and written with the Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy.

COLUMBUS
Jackets, Bob Evans expand deal

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Bob Evans Restaurants expanded their corporate partnership. Bob Evans will present the signature “Chili Chant”
during Blue Jackets home games. This promotion allows ticket holders to redeem their game tickets for a free cup of chili the day after a game in which the home team scores at least three goals. Bob Evans Foods has been a team partner since the 2009-10 season.

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA.
Fans voting on race format

Sprint will allow fans to determine the format of the first race of the Sprint Cup Series season, the Sprint Unlimited at Daytona. By voting at NASCAR.com or on NASCAR mobile apps, fans can choose the number of laps from three options; dictate the type of pit stop; determine the number of cars eliminated after the second segment; and Miss Sprint Cup’s fire suit design.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS
Track makes changes, reduces prices

Texas Motor Speedway is implementing changes this year, known as the “Fan-Fueled Evolution.” Changes include a new children’s ticket program, adult individual ticket restructuring, race-related perks for season-ticket holders and a ban on smoking in the track’s grandstands. Track President Eddie Gossage announced plans to reduce ticket prices on more than 15,000 seats.

IJTA semester under way

The Ivan Lendl International Junior Tennis Academy has a spring class from 11 states and four countries. The new semester for grades 5-12 began Jan. 7 and has students from Bulgaria, New Zealand, Russia and the U.S.

Minority-owned firms win bids

The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority announced that more than a dozen women- and minority-owned engineering firms won bids to work on the new Minnesota Vikings stadium, according to a Minneapolis Star Tribune report. The contracts are worth an estimated $5 million and will include civil engineering, landscape and traffic flow design work, electrical, mechanical and other services.

REI sponsoring Five Boro Bike Tour

National outdoor retailer REI will be the presenting sponsor of the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour. The TD Five Boro Bike Tour presented by REI offers 32,000 cyclists a chance to ride 40 miles through all five boroughs. REI will also have a significant presence at Bike Expo New York 2013, May 3-4. The bike tour is May 5.

OTTAWA
Senators, Chrysler reach 3-year deal

The Ottawa Senators and Chrysler Dealer Advertising Association of Ontario reached a three-year deal that makes Chrysler/Dodge the team’s exclusive automotive partner. Chrysler will have new in-arena signage including an in-ice logo, LED power ring messaging and Dodge vehicles on display at Scotiabank Place.

PHILADELPHIA
Soul signs casino sponsorship

Parx Casino signed a deal to be presenting sponsor of the Philadelphia Soul for the 2013 and 2014 AFL seasons. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Elements will include a newly created co-branded logo, to be featured on all team printed assets. The Soul’s last presenting sponsor was Frederick’s Chevrolet on the Boulevard.

Cycling event taking year off
Organizers of the Philadelphia International Cycling Championship said the race will not be held in 2013. Race organizers said they expect to bring the cycling championship back with new partners in 2014. The 156-mile race has had several corporate sponsors since its debut in 1985. TD Bank was the most recent sponsor as the event was scaled back from three days to one.

RALEIGH
’Canes, Lenovo extend deal

The Carolina Hurricanes and Lenovo extended their sponsorship agreement for three years. Aspects will include co-sponsorship of the Lenovo Community Champions program, a new initiative that will look to recognize nonprofit organizations, especially those that focus on K-12 education and military support.

A passion for cars has turned into a second career for San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan. The four-time NBA champ opened BlackJack Speed Shop, a car and truck customization shop featuring a 4,000-square-foot showroom and an 8,000-square-foot shop with 10 bays.

Tournament debuts military venue

Waste Management Phoenix Open tournament hosts the Thunderbirds will open a new venue exclusively for U.S. military service members at the 2013 tournament called the Birdies for the Brave Patriots’ Outpost. The Thunderbirds are inviting all active, reserve and military retirees and one guest to attend all days of the event this week free of charge.

The St. Louis Blues and Skyview Networks reached a multiyear broadcast solutions partnership for radio that sees Skyview Networks provide its distribution service to the franchise for all radio play-by-play broadcasts.

Bautista graces Canada cover

Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Jose Bautista will be featured on the cover of the Canadian edition of Sony’s “MLB 13 The Show,” marking the second straight year he has appeared on the cover and the second year Canada has had its own edition of the game.

Cheez-It title sponsoring Cup race

Cheez-It will be the title sponsor of Watkins Glen International’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. The Cheez-It 355 at The Glen weekend is scheduled for Aug. 8-11. Terms of the multiyear deal with Kellogg Co., makers of Cheez-It, were not disclosed.

UFC, Repucom doing

global research

    The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Repucom reached a global research partnership that includes development of an integrated research platform designed to track the impact and effectiveness of the UFC brand around the world.    
    The partnership includes global fan research, broadcast auditing and sponsor evaluation for the entire UFC schedule. Repucom will monitor UFC’s brand health and evaluate the success of its corporate partners in key markets.
The partnership will engage Repucom’s global network with more than 20 global offices and a presence on every continent.
    The research platform also will include programming such as the UFC reality series “The Ultimate Fighter.” The longest-running sports reality show on television is in its 17th season in the U.S., with international versions in Brazil and Australia, and additional countries expected to debut this year.

Adidas providing marathon apparel
Building on a three-year partnership, Adidas and the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon joined forces for this year’s marathon, to be held Friday. Adidas will provide all participants, officials and volunteers with commemorative apparel.

Cycling event set for June
British Cycling confirmed that the 2013 Elite Men’s and Women’s National Road Race Championships will be staged in Glasgow. The June 23 event will form part of the proposed course for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Mariners, Mars Food extend deal
Mars Food Australia extended its deal with A-League club Central Coast Mariners as the front of shirt sponsor via its Masterfoods brand until the end of the 2013-14 season. Mars is entering its ninth year as a partner of the soccer club.

ISTANBUL
Companies unite for 2020 bid
Istanbul 2020 announced that seven of Turkey’s largest companies will unite to sponsor the nation’s bid to host its first Olympic and Paralympic Games in a series of deals worth more than $20 million. The seven Istanbul 2020 national sponsors are: Digiturk, Dogus Holding, Koç Holding, Sabancı Holding, Turkcell, Turkish Airlines, and Ülker.

Olympic basketball arena for sale
The London Olympic basketball arena is for sale, according to a Reuters report. A buyer has the option of either the whole venue or bidding instead for the 12,000 seats and internal fittings. GL Events Slick Seating said that it was organizing the sale of the arena.

Live Nation gets Olympic Park rights    
Live Nation secured an exclusive deal to host events in London’s Olympic Park and Olympic Stadium this summer. Details of the music acts and dates to perform at the site will be announced in the first quarter of 2013, Live Nation said.

PokerStars buys in with Lyon
Ligue 1 club Lyon agreed to a sponsorship deal with online poker operator PokerStars. The agreement will see video branding for the company appear on screens inside the soccer team’s 40,000-seat Stade Gerland.

MADRID
Law targets La Liga rights distribution
The Spanish government is preparing a law that will require La Liga clubs to sell their media rights collectively, according to an Ecoteuve report. This would put an end to the status quo, in which La Liga, Real Madrid and Barcelona make significantly more than the rest of the top-flight clubs.

Olympique Marseille renews Orange
Ligue 1 Olympique Marseille and telecom company Orange renewed their partnership for another two seasons. The two parties have been partners since 2001.

SOCHI, RUSSIA
Sochi 2014 deals with grocer group
The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee entered into a licensing agreement with Russian grocery market X5 Retail Group. The sales of the Sochi 2014 licensed merchandise will be organized in 45 Russian regions in 3,500 shops of its stores.
