The Boston Celtics are launching their first mobile application, through which the team will become the second NBA club to feature live audio streaming for their games.
Including the Celtics, 16 of the NBA’s 30 teams will have mobile apps, but only the Phoenix Suns will be alongside Boston in offering live game audio streams via the team app. The Suns began live audio streaming on their app last season.
In addition to streaming, the app offers team info.
In addition to the game audio, the offering will provide team news, statistics and game information.
The audio feed for the team’s games will come from the Celtics’ radio partner, WEEI. The streams will be restricted to users within 75 miles of Boston to comply with league marketing rules, but the other features of the app won’t be limited geographically.
“We wanted to come out of the gate to differentiate the app a bit,” said Celtics President Rich Gotham. “With WEEI as our radio partner, we thought we could add a little sizzle behind it.”
In addition to the game audio via WEEI, the Celtics plan to offer streaming of other team events, such as annual media days. Also planned are interviews in which Celtics players answer questions that have been submitted by fans through Twitter.
“It is a way for fans to have direct contact to the players through the app,” said Peter Stringer, Celtics senior director of interactive media.
The team partnered with Watertown, Mass.-based Adept Mobile to create the app, which will also allow the team to identify and offer last-minute ticket deals exclusively for Celtics Mobile users through the app’s geo-targeting feature.
The Celtics typically sell out home games, but the offering allows them to make available any ticket inventory that does become available, along with seat upgrades and other promotions. “It is a long-term play now, but we have to be prepared for the rainy day,” Stringer said.
The Celtics are splitting the cost of their live streaming efforts with WEEI.
