Tourists getting new playing surface

McCormick Field, home of the Asheville Tourists since 1924 and last renovated in 1992, is undergoing a renovation by Fields Inc. Fields began removing turf last month and plans to complete the playing surface project by mid-October. The Tourists are the Class A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.

BOSTON

Celtics back in the lottery game
Lottery retailers statewide are selling a new instant ticket from the Massachusetts State Lottery and the Boston Celtics. The $2 ticket’s front is emblazoned with an image of the banners commemorating the Celtics’ 17 championship seasons and marks the lottery’s fourth Celtics-branded ticket released since 2006.

BUFFALO
Sabres’ plaza gets Tops sponsor

Tops Friendly Markets will be the title sponsor of the Buffalo Sabres’ Alumni Plaza. The plaza was to be officially dedicated Oct. 12. The plaza, which sits directly outside First Niagara Center, will serve as a tribute to the 400-plus players who have played for the Sabres.

Bills, M&T Bank honor teachers

For the fourth consecutive season, the Buffalo Bills and M&T Bank are sponsoring the Touchdown for Teachers program. Five finalists will receive two tickets each to the Bills-Jacksonville Jaguars game Dec. 2. The grand-prize winner will receive an in-class visit from a Bills player and a $1,000 grant to that teacher’s school.

CHARLOTTE
Belk, Panthers QB team up for apparel

Charlotte-based department store chain Belk has partnered with Panthers quarterback Cam Newton to launch a men’s apparel line called Made Cam Newton. The line will debut in the spring and will feature men’s professional apparel, accessories and shoes.

CINCINNATI
P&G puts $2M toward youth academy

Procter & Gamble committed $2 million to the Cincinnati Reds and the Reds Community Fund’s Urban Youth Academy. The facility will be a baseball and softball training facility in Cincinnati that provides free, year-round instruction for boys and girls ages 6-18. Groundbreaking will be next year, and the project is expected to be finished in 2015.

CLEVELAND
Cavs, Monsters sign OXYwater

The Cleveland Cavaliers reached a multiyear partnership with Columbus-based OXYwater as the official health beverage for the Cavs and their sister team, the American Hockey League’s Lake Erie Monsters. Partnership elements include branding rights for bench coolers, ice chests, squeeze bottles, and player towels and cups at Quicken Loans Arena and Cleveland Clinic Courts.

COLUMBUS
Jackets mix it up with Cold Stone

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Cold Stone Creamery reached a new multiyear partnership that includes designation as the official ice cream of the team. The partnership includes branding rights to the premium ice cream stand on the main concourse of Nationwide Arena as well as a pair of portable carts.

DENVER
US Bank sponsoring DU athletics

US Bank signed a multiyear agreement to sponsor the University of Denver athletic department. The bank becomes the official bank of University of Denver athletics with the start of the 2012-13 athletic season. The US Bank name will be visible at DU’s athletic venues.

HAMILTON, ONTARIO
Bulldogs add TVA as French broadcaster

TVA Sports was named the official French-language television broadcaster of the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldogs, and will produce and air Bulldogs games beginning this season. The first TVA Sports broadcast will be Saturday as the Bulldogs — affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens — face off against the Toronto Marlies at Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto.

KANSAS CITY
Royals increasing season-ticket prices

The Kansas City Royals next season will increase season-ticket prices for nearly all seats, according to a Kansas City Star report. The increase for fans with season tickets before this year will range from $1 to $3 a ticket. Crown Club seat prices are dropping by $5 a ticket.

MEMPHIS
Raceway campaigns against street racing

Memphis International Raceway launched its “Race on the Track NOT on the Street” campaign to discourage illegal street racing. The campaign can be seen on local cable access channels. Top Fuel driver Clay Millican is the spokesman for the campaign.

NEW YORK
Insurer title sponsoring hoops Classic

Progressive Insurance signed on as the title sponsor of the 2012 Progressive Legends Classic, with championship games being played at Barclays Center on Nov. 20. Indiana, UCLA, Georgetown and Georgia will host a pair of regional-round games on their home courts beginning Nov. 11 before advancing to the championship rounds at the arena in Brooklyn.

ORLANDO
Magic games in Spanish go online only

For the first time, all Orlando Magic games will be broadcast in Spanish exclusively on the Magic’s Spanish website, ElOrlandoMagic.com. Joey Colon will begin his 15th season as the Spanish play-by-play announcer. The Magic launched ElOrlandoMagic.com in October 2010.

Philadelphia Phillies Ballgirls show off some of the styles in their new fashion line.

Ballgirls launch fashion line

The Philadelphia Phillies Ballgirls launched a fall fashion line for fans. The collection features the new Phillies Ballgirls Dress, which the Ballgirls wear at off-field community appearances. The dress was the winning design of the recent Macy’s Phillies Ballgirls Design Challenge. The fashion line is available at the Majestic Clubhouse Store at Citizens Bank Park or on the team’s website.

PHOENIX
NASCAR Mexico series coming to PIR

The NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series will make its U.S. debut at Phoenix International Raceway during the March 2013 race weekend. The event will be run March 1 as part of the Subway Fresh Fit 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend. The race will be televised in the U.S., Mexico and Latin America.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA.
ATP World Tour, resort cross-promote

The ATP World Tour and the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club outside Jacksonville entered a marketing agreement in which they will promote each other. No dollars will be exchanged, but the inn, a 250-room oceanfront resort in Ponte Vedra Beach, will be promoted on the ATP’s website. The resort will promote the ATP on its website and give the ATP access to its database of guest information to market its tennis tournaments.

SAN ANTONIO
Youth football event fills out brackets

The FBU National Championship — a football version of the Little League World Series — has expanded to 64 teams competing in an NCAA-style bracket tournament. All American Games is producing the tournament, which features teams of seventh- and eighth-graders. Event sponsors include adidas, Gatorade, Eastbay, Xenith and Holiday Inn. The first four rounds will take place at regional sites starting Dec. 1, and the semifinals and championship will take place Jan. 5-6 at the Alamodome as part of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl week celebration.

TAMPA-ST. PETERSBURG
Bucs partner with Marriott International

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers reached a multiyear sponsorship with Marriott International. The deal includes Marriott’s top two luxury hotel brands: The Renaissance and Ritz-Carlton.

NASCAR recycling partner activates
Tampa-based NASCAR partner Creative Recycling Systems is activating its NASCAR Green partnership by launching an online electronics recycling program at PlanetGadgetUSA.com and accompanying sweepstakes at Gadget500.com. The program will be promoted at NASCAR tracks for the rest of the season.

AUGSBERG, GERMANY
Diboss outfits Panther suites
German Hockey League club Augsburger Panther agreed to a new partnership with digital communications provider Diboss Deutschland AG. The company installed a total of 21 displays in the suites of the club’s arena and two digital information displays in the arena’s foyers.

DELHI, INDIA
Horse health delays polo season
The start of Delhi’s polo season was delayed after a case of equine infectious anemia was discovered in the Delhi, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The Ministry of Agriculture said that it has ordered restrictions on the movement of horses in Delhi and the neighboring state of Haryana.

DORTMUND, GERMANY
Team stocks vending machine with gear
Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund is the first German football club to set up a merchandise vending machine, according to a report online at RuhrNachrichten.de. The vending machine at the Dortmund Airport is stocked with the club’s 20 most sought-after merchandise items. Munich-based Goodlist GmbH produced the vending machine.

HANOVER, GERMANY
Hannover 96 signs Sportingbet  
Bundesliga club Hannover 96 partnered with online betting provider Sportingbet. The deal includes cam carpets (3-D signs) on the field and ad space on LED and rotating boards inside the stadium. The club also extended its partnership with health insurance company AOK Niedersachsen until 2016.

HONG KONG
Government to pay for ManU game  
The Hong Kong government agreed to help foot the bill for Manchester United to play an exhibition game against Hong Kong champions Kitchee in July, according to a South China Morning Post report. The match, hosted by the Kitchee Foundation, will take place at Hong Kong Stadium.

ISTANBUL, TURKEY
Besiktas Istanbul partners with IMG
Besiktas Football Investments Co. and IMG Dogus signed a letter of intent to develop sports, fashion and art projects in Istanbul. It marks the first major initiative undertaken by the IMG Dogus joint venture. IMG Chairman and CEO Michael Dolan, representing IMG Dogus, and Besiktas JK Chairman Fikret Orman signed the letter of intent in Istanbul.

LIÈGE, BELGIUM
Unibet to sponsor team
Belgium Pro League club Standard de Liège agreed to a sponsorship deal with online betting company Unibet, according to a report online at Walfoot.be. The company becomes the official betting partner of the football team.

MADRID
Real Madrid extends Sanitas deal
Real Madrid extended its partnership with health care company Sanitas for three more seasons. The two organizations have been working together since 2008.

MELBOURNE
Hawks link up with iiNet
The Australian Football League’s Hawthorn Hawks joined forces with iiNet, Australia’s second largest DSL Internet service provider. The three-year deal will see iiNet featured prominently on the back of the Hawks’ jersey and on the new 2013 range of Hawks’ apparel.

Consultant calls on women
Bonita Mersiades, former head of corporate affairs for Football Federation Australia, called for more women to be involved at board and senior management level during last week’s Asia Pacific World Sport and Women Conference in Melbourne, according to a report in The Australian. Mersiades is now a writer and consultant.

RIO DE JANEIRO
Adidas deal could be worth $229M               
Brasileiro club Flamengo’s board of directors was to receive a 10-year sponsorship proposal from Adidas that could be worth as much as $229 million, according to a report at Lancenet.com.br. The club would receive $17.2 million starting in 2013, with the amount increasing every year until the deal expired in 2022.

Olympic golf clubhouse design awarded               
Brazilian architect Pedro Évora won a competition to design the 2016 Olympic golf course clubhouse. The winning project, which was revealed at the Brazilian Institute of Architects, Rio de Janeiro department, features a large veranda showcasing the lush tropical landscape of the city’s Barra da Tijuca.

SOCHI, RUSSIA
Torch relay details announced
Up to 130 million Russians are expected to be able to see the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay as it travels around the country. The Olympic flame will travel in the hands of 14,000 torchbearers over 123 days and through 2,900 towns and settlements.

SOFIA, BELGIUM
Airline title sponsoring WTA event
Qatar Airways signed on as the title sponsor for the WTA’s Tournament of Champions, to be held at Arena Armeec in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, Oct. 30-Nov. 4. The event will officially be known as the Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions Sofia.

STAFFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND
FA opens national training center
England’s Football Association opened its new national soccer training center at St. George’s Park last week. The grand opening was attended by Prince William and Kate Middleton. The 330-acre facility has 11 fields, a practice and training area for goalkeepers and various sports pavilions.
