Is this shape-shifting of games and venues a fading fad or a future force? Are we going to see the Yankees and the Red Sox playing a game in Tiananmen Square in front of 450,000 Beijing baseball fans?
The NHL is talking about playing the Winter Classic in the Big House at Michigan in 2013. In 2010, 113,411 turned out for the Big Chill collegiate hockey matchup between Michigan and Michigan State. If this Big Chill Winter Classic is a success, might we soon see a game on a frozen Great Lake? This mega event could break all-time attendance records and be the first multiple sports triple-header. I can see it now: the NHL Winter Classic, with an NCAA Big Chill and the Bass Pro Shops Big Drill World Ice Fishing Championship as the nightcap. Just imagine the beer sales for this ice festival.
Sports is a follow-the-leader business, especially when it comes to testing new promotions and marketing platforms. As soon as one league, team or creative staffer comes up with a viable concept, everyone else falls in line. The variable-venue venture is the newest tool used to increase revenue in the world of sports.
We know that history is always our best teacher. So, where did this all start? In 1959, during the construction of Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers were playing baseball games at the football-configured Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Each of the three World Series games drew 92,000 fans. On April 6, 1965, the world’s first multipurpose domed sports stadium opened. The Houston Astros became the first Major League Baseball team to play indoors when the Astrodome hosted a preseason game with the Yankees. Nicknamed The Eighth Wonder of the World, the Astrodome was considered the ultimate stadium of the future. Today, only maintenance workers, security personnel and pigeons are allowed in.
The key factors working in favor of the continued expansion of traditional games in nontraditional settings are easy to understand:
■ Increased gross revenues.
■ Increased media exposure from outside the sports pages: “Look, grandma: There’s a hockey goalie at shortstop.”
■ It reconnects fans with a sport’s origins, like playing hockey on a frozen pond or hoops outdoors.
■ Watching players cope with unpredictable conditions.
■ The Woodstock factor: It’s cool to be at the game.
■ Breaking attendance records.
■ Giving fans a break from today’s hermetically sealed, overly programmed, stadiums and arenas.
But there are just as many reasons why the variable-venue venture may go the way of the XFL:
■ Unpredictable weather conditions. Shooting 3s in gale-force winds can be a bit difficult.
■ The live gate and TV revenue can be wiped out if games are postponed.
■ Fans want nanosecond newness. If the games become hackneyed, they will find alternatives for their disposable dollars.
■ A star player injury caused by the nontraditional venue.
■ Security concerns.
■ Fans are creatures of habits and don’t always accept change, especially if their season-tickets locations are compromised in an alternative venue.
■ Service issues.
Discussions are under way on the next big breakthrough venue. In order to capture hearts, minds, media and wallets, it will have to be out of this world. In 1995, Gould, in his role with the NLRB, cast the deciding vote to obtain the injunction that brought an end to baseball’s longest work stoppage, one that cost MLB the 1994 World Series. Since then, MLB and the MLB Players Association have reached a series of new collective-bargaining agreements
Gould in his book looks at the history of labor relations in baseball and the game both on and off the field. The following excerpt, specifically, spotlights gains for both the league and the players because of the development of the players’ union in the sport.
The game’s beauty and drama make it difficult for some to see players as employees. Indeed, baseball’s owners insisted that the players were not employees within the meaning of the National Labor Relations Act, the principal labor relations statute in the United States, which has been at the center of so many controversies between the players and owners since the 1960s. Hitting, running, the long run that is necessary to corral a long fly or line drive — these are all joyful experiences, the memories of which are enhanced with each passing year. But the relevant quasi-judicial administrative agency, the National Labor Relations Board, nonetheless concluded that players in all major sports, as well as umpires, were employees affected by issues of compensation and working conditions at the dawn of a wide variety of sports-related labor disputes. …
Collective bargaining has now become the forum for differences between the parties in baseball. Previously it was the courts which had been involved with disputes between players and owners every time a rival league emerged, particularly at the turn of the century before the establishment of organized baseball in 1901, and again at the time of its rival’s establishment, the Federal Baseball League in 1914. Players sought to “jump” from one league to another to enhance their earnings, and for the same reasons, owners sought to restrain them through contract and the reserve clause, which obligated a player to stay with a team beyond the contract expiration date. …
This took place alongside another development which was to prove unsuccessful in the short run (but, as noted, most successful in the long run): the attempt to form a union under the leadership of ex-National Labor Relations Board lawyer Robert Murphy. The effort fell by the wayside in the summer of 1946 when the Pittsburgh Pirates, at the urging of “blooper” pitch specialist “Rip” Sewell, refused to support the union and facilitated his teammates’ ballot rejection of a strike. The owners instituted a pension fund soon thereafter, co-opting some of the leading players in the process. An attack upon the reserve system in baseball, let alone the idea that a union could properly represent the players, was at this point beyond the wildest stretch of anyone’s imagination.
An environment created by a strong union helped Sabathia and other players land multiyear and multimillion-dollar contracts.

These developments have affected virtually everything in baseball, the most immediate and obvious illustrations being not only the player salaries but their conditions of employment, both at home ballparks and during travel on the road. Players in the post-World War II period, and for a substantial period thereafter, roomed with one another, something that never happens today! It has affected the relationship between managers and players as the former group’s salaries have been dwarfed by the players’ in most instances. And it has affected the way in which player performances are measured, the use of statistical data to determine what salary should be provided to a player, either through free-agency negotiations or through the salary arbitration process which is rooted in comparisons to others — and which in turn is used as evidence in free agency negotiations. The labor component has made owners more interested in competing for available dollars with the other major sports, raising revenues through ticket prices, radio and television contracts, and the sale of licensed products both home and abroad.

Of course, traditionally a number of American players came from Latin America, particularly countries like Cuba (where the game is truly the national pastime) and Venezuela at mid-century. Even the racially bigoted Washington Senators went after light-skinned Latin American players while they closed their doors to black Americans. But the numbers of foreigners have now increased to almost a third of all major league players, coming from the Dominican Republic, Mexico, South Africa, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Australia — with Europe, mainland China, and Africa appearing to be part of baseball’s twenty-first century future.
This has meant new venues for radio and television contracts abroad, as well as markets for shirts, caps, and a wide variety of other products licensed by Major League Baseball, revenues from which the MLB franchises share equally. It has meant, in the case of Japan and Korea, agreements between Major League Baseball and those countries which regulate the process through which players move back and forth across national boundaries. And it has meant large fees paid to American teams by Japanese companies to advertise their product in Japan, where a nation watches raptly the performance of Japanese players abroad.
In Latin America it has meant the establishment of baseball academies in countries like the Dominican Republic, which, along with Venezuela, supplies a plurality of the Major League Baseball talent. …
And in 2006 the landmark World Baseball Classic — the first of its kind — was played in the United States, Latin America and the Far East. Another one was played in 2009! This enhanced the prospect of a true World Series and true World Championship at some point in the twenty-first century, as well as possible expansion of baseball to other countries and the internationalization of norms and standard to apply to relationships between players and owners across national boundaries. Notwithstanding the fact that jet travel has not progressed substantially beyond what it was in the 1950s and ’60s, thus making a genuine international league with head-to-head competition at this point fanciful, future institutional international arrangements or leagues are nonetheless possible. They can and should happen.
The question never struck me as surprising, but what did strike me was how often I was asked it. “How much do those guys make?” my buddies would ask me. They would be pointing to Dan Marino on CBS, Steve Young or Trent Dilfer on ESPN, or Howie Long on Fox. I always had the same response: “You know, I don’t know.” And it bothered me. “Aren’t you supposed to know those things? I thought that’s what you did?” was the consistent, quizzical follow-up from my support group. “Yes, I should,” I’d say, and then I’d instantly go back to the bottle of wine.
So we made an effort over time to look into the state of sports broadcasting in regard to the ex-athletes and former coaches. They are ubiquitous, but little is really known about them. What is their pay scale, their schedule, their hours, their workload? Time and again we’d go down the path of trying to tell this story but would run into obstructions or empty promises from those who failed to deliver the goods they said they could.
It’s OK; that frequently happens. But we kept trying, and this week, Liz Mullen presents an extensive look at the culture after talking to a number of people directly related to the business. She’ll be the first to tell you that it was a difficult story to report, with specifics and sources hard to come by. And while exact figures are not available, we have presented a range of financials and a scope of hours and day-to-day responsibilities. It’s a good read.
You can tell that these are not easy jobs, and we’ve all seen those who have debuted to less-than-stellar reviews but have gradually improved. Bill Parcells comes to mind for me. His early days at NBC were not nearly as compelling as he is now while talking on ESPN’s “NFL Countdown.” He’s more pointed, more comfortable on air, and certainly more colorful and willing to give frank perspective.
I enjoy learning from people who have played and coached the game, and we’ve tried to have a little fun in forecasting some players and coaches who could be the next stars on the set or in the booth. So I’m glad we’re finally telling this story, and while I won’t be able to offer a specific salary the next time I’m asked the question, no doubt around this week’s AFC and NFC championship games, I’ll at least be armed with some data. Surely that will placate my friends … until their next question that I don’t have the answer to frustrates them.

You may have seen some changes at ESPN2’s “First Take,” where the show will be revamped and focused more around Skip Bayless. Do we really need more of this? Frankly, I am baffled at how Bayless is a ratings draw, but apparently he is. I know that at age 43 I’m out of ESPN’s demo focus, but the constant bloviating by Bayless on that show showcases much of what I feel is so entirely wrong with that “yell my opinion because I know it all” and “play up the dramatics for the camera” type of programming. I’m both surprised and discouraged that the style sticks.
