Published January 10, 2011, Page 5
In what is a newly created job at MSG, Economou will be responsible for revenue generation and performance across all MSG Sports properties, which include the New York Knicks, NHL Rangers and WNBA Liberty. His duties will also include overseeing corporate sales strategies and developing relationships with MSG’s current and potential marketing partners.
MSG Sports officials confirmed the hire but would not comment. Economou also would not comment.
Economou is expected to join MSG Sports this month and report to MSG Sports President Scott O’Neil.
The hiring is the latest front office move at MSG Sports, which recently saw Sean Barror, senior vice president of sales, leave the company. Late last month, MSG promoted Howard Jacobs to executive vice president of marketing and sales, Mike Ondrejko to senior vice president of corporate hospitality sales and service, and Sean Downes to vice president of corporate entertainment solutions.
Prior to joining MSG Sports, Economou ran his Charlotte-based BrandThink sports marketing consultancy. He worked for the Charlotte Bobcats as executive vice president and chief marketing officer from September 2006 to September 2008. Before joining the Bobcats, Economou was senior vice president of marketing and communications for the NBA from April 2006 to September 2006. During that time at the NBA, he worked with O’Neil.
Eastman & Beaudine conducted the executive search for MSG.
Economou comes to MSG Sports during its $800 million phase-in renovation of Madison Square Garden that is expected to be completed by 2013. The arena’s facelift has helped drive sponsorship business at MSG Sports. Last year, the company signed major sponsorship deals with JPMorgan Chase, Anheuser-Busch, Delta and Coca-Cola.
