Kickoff pizza party
NFL team owners Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys and Daniel Snyder of the Washington Redskins enjoy a slice of pizza with Papa John’s founder John Schnatter at Cowboys Stadium as part of a Papa John’s video shoot. The video, shot Sept. 1, will air during NBC’s “Football Night in America” on Sept. 12 before the Cowboys and Redskins open their NFL regular season in Washington. Papa John’s is the official pizza sponsor of the NFL and 12 of its teams, including the Cowboys and Redskins.
Bobcats give a cheer (and check) for school athletics
Bobcats Sports & Entertainment on Aug. 30 announced a $250,000 donation to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools scholarship fund to help defray the costs of middle school athletics. BSE television rights holder Fox Sports Carolinas is also participating as a co-sponsor in the initiative. At the U.S. Open, Madison Square Garden and StarGames presented Ivan Lendl with a gift commemorating the 25th anniversary of his first Open championship. Lendl is scheduled to face John McEnroe in the BNP Paribas Showdown on Feb. 28 at MSG. Birdie for Barclays
Barclays PLC announced a $50,000 donation to the PGA Tour’s Birdies for the Brave program for military home front groups as part of the Chips for Charity event Aug. 24 aboard the former USS Intrepid at Pier 86 in New York City. Milwaukee’s best at Miller
The Milwaukee Brewers unveiled a statue honoring MLB Commissioner and former Brewers owner Bud Selig on Aug. 24 at Miller Park. The statue joined those of Hank Aaron and Robin Yount, which were unveiled in 2001, the year the ballpark opened. Aaron (left) and Yount (right) joined Selig’s family and friends and other guests in honoring the commissioner.
