Honus Wagner rarity at auction
Hunt Auctions will offer a unique 1909 Honus Wagner tobacco card proof strip as the main attraction of the 2010 Live Auction at MLB All-Star FanFest on July 13 at the Anaheim Convention Center. The rare piece is expected to fetch more than $250,000. There will be 700 other items of baseball history available, including a 1961 Whitey Ford Cy Young plaque, bats from Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson and Joe DiMaggio, and a memorabilia collection from broadcast veteran Dick Enberg.
AAA Travel packing with Bruins
The Boston Bruins reached a deal for AAA Travel to become the exclusive provider of “Boston Bruins Fan Experience Packages” for the club’s coming games in Northern Ireland and the Czech Republic. AAA will offer four Bruins-branded travel packages.
NKU to host D-II Elite Eight
The NCAA selected Northern Kentucky University to host the 2012 and 2013 Elite Eight men’s Division II basketball tournaments. The university, in the suburb of Highland Heights, Ky., opened the 9,400-seat Bank of Kentucky Center in 2008.
Arena owners stave off foreclosure
U.S. Bank Arena’s owners will avoid foreclosure by agreeing to pay about $887,000 in back taxes and other payments, according to the Hamilton County prosecutor’s office. Arena Management Holdings, the building’s owner, will make payments over the next 2 1/2 years. The Hamilton County treasurer filed a foreclosure lawsuit May 3. The arena, on Cincinnati’s riverfront, is home to the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones.
Cavs add color to logos
The Cleveland Cavaliers updated their primary and secondary logos and word marks. The designs will remain the same, but the colors will change, to a deeper wine and brighter gold, which are truer to the hues that were a part of the team’s history from 1970 to 1983.
MAC to use XOS Replay system
As an existing partner of XOS Digital, the Mid-American Conference will use the company’s basketball XOS Replay system for next year’s men’s and women’s games. The 12-school conference is based in Cleveland.
Jackets stay sharp with Sport Clips
The Columbus Blue Jackets renewed their corporate partnership with Sport Clips. The haircuts chain began its affiliation with the team last season. The centerpiece of Sport Clips’ agreement is a retail promotion at participating central Ohio locations in which fans may win Blue Jackets prizes. Other components include in-arena and online messaging elements.

Coke Zero 400 to be shown in 3-D
The July 3 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coke Zero 400 will be televised in 3-D through DirecTV and via the TNT RaceBuddy on NASCAR.com. The race at Daytona International Speedway will mark NASCAR’s first foray into 3-D programming. The online and TV 3-D production will feature two custom race feeds produced specifically for 3-D.
WAC to use XOS HD system
The Western Athletic Conference will use XOS Digital’s high-definition instant replay system for the coming football season. All nine member schools will use the system for select home games. The conference is based in Greenwood Village, just south of Denver.
Goodell to attend Packers meeting
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will attend the Green Bay Packers’ annual meeting of stakeholders July 29 at Lambeau Field. The event will give Goodell an opportunity to reinforce the team owners’ position that they need a better deal from the union in the new CBA just as teams are reporting to training camps, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Pacers, Emmis continue relationship
The Indiana Pacers and Emmis Communications entered into a new long-term agreement for radio broadcasts of all Pacers games. Under the new agreement, Pacers broadcasts will move to WIBC-FM, and Indiana Fever games will be aired on WFNI-AM. The coming year will mark the 15th season that Pacers games have been on Emmis stations.
Lakers grace cereal box for third time
The Los Angeles Lakers added to their legacy by securing their 16th NBA title and their third Wheaties box appearance. Wheaties salutes the Lakers with a 15.6-ounce box, available nationally beginning late next month.
Open-wheel returning in 2011
The IRL is returning to New Hampshire Motor Speedway, part of a larger plan to return open-wheel racing to some of its roots, according to a report in The Indianapolis Star. The track hosted an Izod IndyCar Series race in the first three years of the circuit — 1996-98 — and will have its next race July 31, 2011, according to the report.
Public funding pushed for renovations
A panel charged with studying possible upgrades to Sun Life Stadium recommended that the Miami Dolphins should pursue public funding to renovate the facility to keep it competitive to host Super Bowls, according to a report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The panel, led by former NFL player Dick Anderson, presented its findings to the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee.
Wolves, YMCAs play together
Through a new community partnership between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the YMCAs of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, branch members will have access to special ticket prices for Wolves home games, with a portion of the proceeds going back to the YMCA Y Partners Scholarship Fund. Additionally, Wolves players will make appearances at local YMCAs during the 2010-11 NBA season, and YMCA youth basketball teams will have the opportunity to play at the Target Center.
Adidas outfitting NSU teams
The Northwestern State University athletic department reached a deal making Adidas the official footwear and apparel company of the school for the 2010-11 seasons. The deal is the school’s first departmentwide effort for footwear and apparel.
Titans pick MainGate for retail
The Tennessee Titans selected MainGate Inc. as the exclusive online and off-site merchandiser for the organization. The four-year agreement, which positions MainGate to manage, market and maintain TitansLockerRoom.com, formally begins Thursday.
Irwin Seating granted conversion access
U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Falk ordered Prudential Center officials to allow Irwin Seating to observe, view, photograph and/or videotape a coming conversion of the arena from one event to another, according to a report in the Bergen Record. Irwin Seating is suing Devils Renaissance Development, an affiliate of the New Jersey Devils that developed Prudential Center, for $1.2 million. The order could help clarify the competing claims in a lawsuit about whether Irwin Seating installed substandard seats at the arena, according to the report.
Superdome suite upgrade on schedule
The first phase of an $85 million upgrade under way at the Superdome is set to be completed before the coming NFL season, according to a report in The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune. The phase includes the addition of 15 private box suites on the 300 level and the construction of a press box on the 700 level.
Sixth team to join UFL
The United Football League board agreed to conditional approval for Norfolk, Va., to host the league’s sixth team, which will begin play in 2011. The new team will face the Florida Tuskers, Hartford Colonials, Las Vegas Locomotives, Omaha Nighthawks, Sacramento Mountain Lions and additional potential expansion teams when the third UFL season kicks off in 2011.
City OKs doubling of some parking rates
The Orlando City Council voted to double to $20 the parking rate for Orlando Magic games, concerts and other events at the two garages closest to the new Amway Center, according to a report in The Orlando Sentinel. The council also raised the cost to park at the Citrus Bowl to $20 during the most popular events, according to the report.

The Orlando Magic retained Circulation Expertí Ltd. and Act-é Marketing Solutions to serve collectively as its multicultural marketing agencies. The agencies will provide public relations, advertising and marketing services to strengthen the Magic’s outreach across diverse communities throughout Central Florida.

The Philadelphia Union added brewing giant Anheuser-Busch to its list of founding corporate partners. The integrated partnership provides A-B various marketing elements at the new PPL Park and in-market promotional rights.
Mascot ‘Legends’ will race at Chase
Randy Johnson, Luis Gonzalez, Matt Williams and Mark Grace will be depicted as 10-foot-tall men in uniform with foam heads as the four participants in the D-backs Legends Race, presented by Henkel, that will debut at Chase Field on Friday. The new between-innings promotion will continue after the fifth inning of every home game. The Legends will become mascots of the organization and run in the races.
Cards want fan input for film fest
The St. Louis Cardinals are encouraging fans to take part in the Flat Stan the Man Film Festival on the team’s website as part of Stand for Stan, a grassroots, fan-centered campaign to celebrate Stan Musial’s lifetime of achievement and service. The team is challenging fans to get creative and post their own short Flat Stan the Man Web-based film on the Cardinals’ website.
Panthers award naming rights
Saveology.com is the winner of the 2009-10 seasonlong naming-rights promotion for the Florida Panthers’ Incredible Ice practice facility in Coral Springs, Fla. The venue now will be called the Saveology.com Iceplex. Any local South Florida business that purchased four lower-level season seats were eligible for the random drawing.
Buccaneers analyze new ticket tiers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers co-chairman Bryan Glazer said that the team has seen an increase in sales since adding tiers of ticket prices, including $25 youth general admission, according to a report in the St. Petersburg Times. The report quoted Glazer, speaking at a Tampa Chamber of Commerce luncheon: “Obviously we’re aware of the tough economy out there, and we’ve lowered ticket prices to try to make something affordable for all those fans.”

Paciolan renewed its multiyear deal with Purdue University. The school’s athletic department will continue to use the company’s ticketing and marketing software and will expand its digital ticketing programs throughout Ross-Ade Stadium for football games.

New ballclub joining Florida League
The Florida League is bringing baseball back to the city of Winter Haven in 2011. The Winter Haven Loggerheads signed on to be the league’s sixth team. The Loggerheads will play at Chain of Lakes Park, the former Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox spring training site.
