Game day with Don Renzulli

The NHL transformed historic Fenway Park into a hockey rink on New Year’s Day for a Winter Classic game between the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers. The massive undertaking was managed by NHL Senior Vice President of Events Don Renzulli, who gave us a behind-the-scenes look at his 12-hour blur of a day, which started at 6 a.m. and only saw him sit down once.

6:15AM Renzulli arrives at the rink/ballpark for a stadium walk-through.
6:38AM Does an interview with a local NBC affiliate that is broadcasting live.
7:00AM Leads an all-staff meeting.
9:54AM Begins his last walk-through of the ballpark with Boston Red Sox Executive Vice President of Business Affairs Jonathan Gilula.
11:07AM Opens the Yawkey Way concourse and radios to his staff, “All of your problems are going to come now.”
12:27PM Meets with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, who asks if there are any last-minute issues he needs to be aware of before the game.
12:36PM Escorts a spectator off the field after finding him near the Green Monster without field credentials.
12:39PM Talks to security about double-checking for credentials of people trying to walk on the field.
1:06PM Observes the pregame ceremony from a stage adjacent to the rink, and monitors the production to make sure the event is still on schedule.
1:34PM Listens to NHL VP of Events Dean Matsuzaki after ducking into the visitors dugout along the third-base line for the National Anthem.
1:47PM Talks with Mark Cacciatore of Red Sox security.
2:42PM Takes a break for pizza.
3:22PM Gilula stops by during the third period to check on things.
3:58PM Supervises the ice team’s effort to replace a shattered piece of glass behind the goal.
4:09PM Directs a Honda Crosstour onto the ice after the game for a postgame promotion.
4:27PM Gets a congratulatory hug from NHL Executive Vice President
after the game.
4:54PM Joins his NHL events team for a group photo.
