SBJ/20091221/Holiday Gifts

Books, flicks and anything with ‘the little “i” in front of it’

What books, CDs, DVDs or gadgets do you hope to receive for the holidays, and what will you be buying as gifts?

John McDonough
Chicago Blackhawks

I hope to receive a Kindle.

Jason Simpson
Director, Olympic Integration

Hoping to receive:
The Lonely Planet book “A Year of Sport Travel” — It catalogs all the great sporting events around the world and when to go.

“Planet Earth” on Blu-ray — a very cool nature documentary in HD.

Some golf lessons — I need them.

I’m planning to buy as gifts:
Amazon Kindle

Digital cameras

An aquarium

Rich Gotham
Boston Celtics

For gifts I’m hoping to receive, I’ll take an iAnything … iPhone, iTouch … doesn’t matter as long as it has the little “i” in front of it. Also, “Mad Men” Season 1 on DVD.

For gift giving, it’s not like he needs the help with sales, but I’ll probably spread a few of Bill Simmons’ “The Book of Basketball” around. Also thinking about getting a Kindle for my daughters, who are serious readers.

“In Lincoln’s Hand.” Reprinted original manuscripts with commentary by people like Toni Morrison. It is always educational to read great writers and thinkers.

“Resurrection,” by Jim Dent. This is the story of how Ara Parseghian brought back Notre Dame in 1964 after over a decade of undistinguished football. Yes, I am hoping history can repeat itself.

Yankees 2009 highlights. The natural order of things has been restored, Yanks are back on top where they belong. I want to be able to remember the many magic moments.

“Gladiator” and “The Patriot.” Yes, they are among the ultimate guy films. I have probably watched each about a half-dozen times. Owning them would increase that number quickly.

Le Pergole Torte 2000. This is a “Super Tuscan” from an excellent vintage. A bit of an extravagance but delicious.

Leverage Agency

Hoping to get:
A Regen Reverb Solar-Powered iPod dock — It’s 3 feet tall, solar powered and can really pump out “Thunder Road” before you head to work in the morning.

A J. Crew buffalo tartan tie — Who doesn’t love red flannel?

Planning to buy as gifts:
A scarf-gloves combo, snazzy purse and leather-bound journal for my mom

A Breitling watch for my dad

Don Sweeney
Assistant General Manager & Former NHL Player
Boston Bruins

A Garmin Forerunner 310XT

Kelly Perdew
President and CEO

I want:
A Kindle or other e-reader. Tweaking my back carrying around a briefcase loaded with all the paper — periodicals, newspapers and books. Time to jump in!

Apps for my new Droid. Just got it and learning how to use it. Looking forward to downloading a lot of useful applications (like fantasy sports apps!). So far loving it.

Gifts to buy:
For my stepson: “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare”

For my wife: Whatever she wants — she is delivering twins in two weeks!

Lon Babby
Williams & Connolly

I am planning on giving the “iGO Charge Anywhere” charger, which charges most any device while simultaneously charging multiple devices. It’s great for travel.

Adam Gurian
Timex Business Unit

On the book front, looking to build up my library with biographies/autobiographies of major historical international social and political figures such as Gandhi, Mao Tse-Tung and Churchill in order to build a broader understanding of the foundation of the global mind-set. On a lighter level, any gadget as a gift is great to receive. Books and tools to enhance my efforts in barbecue and smoking will be appreciated.

On the gift front, for my two teenagers, the DVD collection of the original “Saturday Night Live,” so that they can begin to understand what funny television really is.

Jeff Colton
Senior Vice President, U.S.
Callaway Golf

Hoping to receive:
A copy of “How the Mighty Fall,” by Jim Collins

An automatic watch-winder

A new iPod Shuffle

Buying as gifts:
I’ll be getting my wife a simple electronic organizer as her social calendar is jam-packed and always a mess. For the kids, new bikes and an iPod Touch for my oldest.

Evan Kamer
Chief Operating Officer
Fantasy Sports Ventures

Hoping to receive:
Books: “Googled: The End of the World as We Know It,” by Ken Auletta, and “The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt,” by T.J. Stiles

DVD: “Forgotten Miracle: The Story of the 1960 Gold Medal Hockey Team”

Gadget: Kindle

Buying as gifts:
Wii games (Super Mario Bros., Tony Hawk Ride), Dr. Dre headphones and Netflix gift certificates

Matt Kahn
Senior Vice President of Marketing

Hoping to receive:
Andre Agassi’s book — I’m a huge fan of his.

The most recent seasons of “Mad Men,” “Entourage” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm”

50 Cent’s “Before I Self-Destruct” — He’s one of our Vitaminwater partners, so I figure I should try to stay current.

Buying as gifts:
“Dora the Explorer” toys for my 2-year-old daughter

A GPS for my mom, who could get lost in her own cul-de-sac

I’m looking at tennis bracelets for my wife (just in case she’s reading this).

Brandon Tierney
Talk-show host
ESPN Radio

What I want:
A (winning) lottery ticket to help subsidize my upcoming wedding.

Custom-made (left-handed) Five Stars golf clubs made by Honma (a Japanese club manufacturer that constructs its clubs out of platinum and gold). This way I can finally confirm: It’s not the equipment that’s causing my slice … it’s the swing!!!

Johnny Walker Blue — I work hard … may as well sip the best.

What I’m giving:
For Dad, anything that says Ping, Titleist or TaylorMade on it … this way, he looks good when he’s playing with his friends at Marine Park Golf Course, and I look good when I return home to Brooklyn and need to “borrow” something from his closet.

Mom/sister: American Express gift cards … it’s painless, let’s face it.

Fiancée: What, the engagement ring doesn’t count? Honestly, I’m not sure … although I’m pretty sure I’ll wander aimlessly around Tiffany’s at some point before burning a hole in my plastic.
