Santa’s checking his list — on a digital reader, no doubt
Published December 14, 2009
What books, CDs, DVDs or gadgets do you hope to receive for the holidays, and what will you be buying as gifts?
Boston Red Sox
For the holidays I hope to receive:
A Kindle DX, with wireless subscriptions to The Boston Globe and the New York Post, so I can feel loved and hated in the same gadget.
A copy of “Going Rogue,” the new Manny Ramirez autobiography.
For the holidays I hope to give:
A congratulatory holiday Bundt cake to the Yankees, who now have half as many world championships as we do in this century!

I like the new Apple 17-inch MacBook Pro … man, what a great new gadget. I also plan on giving the new “Planet Earth” DVD series as a gift and love to get any books about Winston Churchill. Does anyone still buy CDs? And can someone buy me the wireless music Sonos system?
New York Islanders
I hope to receive a Modern Meyerhoffer surfboard for Christmas. It’s a very radical design innovation in longboarding. If I’m lucky, I’ll get to take it out in the waves on Christmas morning in Hawaii.

I have a Kindle and iPod, so I download all my books and music. So no gift there, really. On the gadget side, I am into gadgets, so I am looking at the HP DreamScreen 100 Internet Touchscreen, the new LG LED HDTV, and the Flo TV personal television. In terms of getting gifts, I will probably get folks the new iPod with video.

One of the pitfalls of being an “early adopter” on the gadget side is that sometimes the items wear out faster and/or evolve quickly with better features. Therefore, given the still weak economy, this will hopefully be a “replacement gadget holiday”: a new TiVo HD XL to replace the Humax TiVo DVD that was so excellent at burning DVDs the past few years. Luckily, sale prices are abundant.
My wife is hinting at a new laptop to replace her aging HP — not sure if she’ll be a Mac or PC for 2010!
The kids will receive some new Xbox 360 games and other items. Since we resisted the early Kindle craze, we may try the Nook, the new digital reader that holds up to 1,500 books that also shares e-books with other smart gadgets … there’s that early adopter instinct at work again!
Hoping to receive: Fela Kuti music, more BlackBerry apps (hey RIM, it’s time to catch up) and “SuperFreakonomics.”
I will be buying: Based on the amount of time I’ve been traveling, a lot of jewelry.
Senior Vice President, Business Development
Hoping to receive: A portable DVD player and headphones.
I will be buying: With two daughters — clothes, clothes and more clothes.
Chairman & CEO
Hoping to receive:
Andre Agassi’s “Open.” The holidays came early this year. Andre sent me a copy and I read it cover to cover the next day. People should reserve judgment and read this amazing personal retrospective.
“Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy.” Our country might be a little further along the path of recovery if he were still with us.
And somehow making my new Apple TV, LED TV, HD DVR, Slingbox and Netflix all talk to each other. The new LED TVs are as much of a watershed moment in home imaging as plasma was to the tube. You can reach out and touch the fuzz on a rotating tennis ball as it cleans the red clay from the baseline.
Hoping to get the CD “That Lonesome Song” by Jamey Johnson.
Senior Vice President & General Manager, Sports Operations
I plan to buy my wife the latest Flip HD or a Boxee box … not at all because those are what I’m hoping to receive.
Williams & Connolly
I wouldn’t mind getting a Kindle or a Nook; I see people with them on planes and they always intrigue me. I’d also like to get an iTouch. We use BlackBerrys at the firm, but I would really like to take advantage of the iTouch apps. Lastly, I’d like to read Roy Williams’ new book, “Hard Work: A Life On and Off the Court. A Memoir by Roy Williams.”
I’m a last-minute shopper, so I have no idea what I’ll be buying for other people (other than my kids). I’m excited to buy “DJ Hero” for my kids. We have been playing “Guitar Hero” (a gift last Christmas) all year and are really excited about playing “DJ Hero.”
Buying: “Book of Basketball: The NBA According to The Sports Guy,” by Bill Simmons
Hoping to get: NBA Live Wii
Executive Vice President, Business Operations
New York Jets
Hoping to receive:
Flip Ultra HD Digital Camcorder
Bluetooth wireless headphones
Any unnecessary running gear or gadget
Books: “Open,” “SuperFreakonomics” and “Too Big to Fail”
CD: “Born to Run”
Planning to give:
A Peter Potty Urinal (it actually flushes!)
“Never Smile at a Monkey” (for my daughter)
“365 Tao: Daily Meditations”
Women’s Professional Soccer
Planning to buy as gifts: 3G iPhone, the new Capitol release of The Beatles anthology and jcrew.com stuff
On my wish list: hi-fi stereo speakers and a treadmill
Deutsche Bank Championship
I’d like to get a few more wins for the Detroit Lions.
