Coke icon makes way for new generation
The 42-foot-tall Coca-Cola contour bottle at Turner Field will be retired on Thursday. The bottle, which has stood for 12 years above left field, is made of more than 11,000 pieces of Atlanta Braves baseball equipment. A new bottle will be constructed in the Coca-Cola Sky Field section later this summer.
Camden Yards part of virtual tour
Fans planning to visit Oriole Park at Camden Yards can now take an online virtual 3-D tour of the area, including the ballpark, surrounding attractions, traffic routes and parking options. Harris Corp., a communications and information technology company, created multiple 3-D flyover videos of the Camden Yards area.
Orioles use outfielders in promotion
The Baltimore Orioles combined the uniform numbers of outfielders Nick Markakis and Adam Jones to re-identify an area of the Eutaw Street Bleachers for a unique promotion. For selected games beginning July 12, a Eutaw Street Bleacher seat and a limited edition “I Live at 2110 Eutaw Street” T-shirt will be available for $21, and for every home run hit by Markakis or Jones, one lucky fan in the section will receive an autographed bat.
Sox, Qdoba sign three-year deal
The Boston Red Sox and Qdoba agreed on a three-year sponsorship and concessions deal that will include in-stadium signs and vendor carts at Fenway Park to sell chips, salsa, guacamole and tortilla soup. Qdoba is activating with a series of in-store promotions and a Kevin Youkilis-branded burrito sold at its Boston-area locations.
Dunkin’ perks include sports prizes
Dunkin’ Donuts launched DD Perks, a loyalty program in which customers can earn rewards and prizes by registering and using their Dunkin’ Donuts card. The program will run through Dec. 31 in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and southern New Hampshire. Boston sports experiences are among the prizes offered.
CHL team suspends operations
The Rocky Mountain Rage, a minor league hockey team, will suspend operations for the 2009-10 season but intends to return to the ice the following year. Rage management said the decision to not play in the coming season was because of the need to re-organize finances, complete a new ownership agreement and sign a long-term lease with the Broomfield Event Center.
Rezoning OK’d for $50M sports facility
The Charlotte City Council approved a rezoning of 135 acres of the Metrolina Tradeshow Expo grounds for the Metrolina Speed & Sports Center, a $50 million amateur sports complex, according to a report in The Charlotte Observer. The development will include a 40,000-square-foot skateboarding facility, a banked racetrack and a 200-room hotel, according to the report.
Packers still profitable after big drop
The Green Bay Packers recorded net income of $4 million in its 2009 fiscal year ending March 31, a big drop from the $23.3 million from a year earlier. The $4 million was the lowest level of net income the team has seen since its $295 million renovation of Lambeau Field in 2004. The publicly owned Packers are the only NFL team that releases its financial results.
Promo puts ‘Duck’ game on big screen
Kansas City-based DXD Sports created a new source of fan interaction during Kansas City Royals games, melding Nintendo Wii technology with traditional crowd contests. By partnering with Dri-Duck, a current Royals sponsor, DXD customized an interactive game called “Shoot the Duck” specifically for the sponsor. The promotion allows a selected fan to play the video game on the Royals’ video board.
Levy to manage Xcel concessions
The Minnesota Wild and Levy Restaurants agreed to a multiyear partnership for food and hospitality at Xcel Energy Center. Levy will manage general concessions in addition to the Iron Range Grill. Guests at the arena will get their first taste of Levy at the No Doubt concert July 5.
Senate OKs budget with Superdome funds
The Louisiana Senate approved a $5.3 billion capital construction budget, fending off an attempt by Sen. Jody Amedee to redirect $85 million from improvements to the Superdome, according to a report in The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune. The bill now returns to the House for approval.
Eagles sell tickets to calendar unveiling
The Philadelphia Eagles are hosting a public event for the first time to unveil the team’s 2009-10 cheerleaders calendar, and charging $22.50 a ticket to attend. The event is being held July 15 at the Prince Music Theater in Center City Philadelphia. All of the Eagles cheerleaders will be on hand modeling the bikinis that were worn during their calendar shoot in Aruba.
customized Web browser
The Philadelphia 76ers introduced a customized official Web browser through Mozilla Firefox. The Sixers-themed browser includes real-time feeds for news, photos and video, plus quick links to the Sixers’ destinations on the Web — including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
Lawsuit against UC Davis settled
A class-action lawsuit against the University of California, Davis over women’s participation in varsity sports has been settled. The lawsuit, whose plaintiffs were current or former students, was filed two years ago under Title IX. The settlement establishes a set of standards for female participation rates in varsity sports at UC Davis and provides additional financial support for club sports at the university.
A’s relocation vote won’t happen in 2009
San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed said there won’t be a vote this year on moving the Oakland A’s to the city. After conversations with Lew Wolff, co-owner of the A’s, Reed said Wolff wants the territorial rights issue resolved before he moves ahead with the ballot measure. The San Francisco Giants own MLB’s territorial rights to the city.
Infineon, Yokohama extend sponsorship
Infineon Raceway and Yokohama Tire Corp. signed a multiyear agreement to extend the tire manufacturer’s status as the official tire manufacturer of the raceway through 2011. The extension continues a six-year relationship with Yokohama. Yokohama has had a presence at the raceway since 1996.
FSG selling Cubs-Cardinals package
Fenway Sports Group, which earlier this year struck a deal with the Chicago Cubs to create a Cubs Destinations travel program, will begin selling an outbound trip to see the Cubs play the Cardinals in St. Louis Sept. 18-20. The package will include field box seats, lodging, a VIP tour of Busch Stadium, a meet-and-greet with a Cubs player, merchandise and other amenities.
