Bills renew pact with MetroMedia
The Buffalo Bills renewed a partnership with MetroMedia Technologies to provide new signs in several parts of Ralph Wilson Stadium, including the main bowl and all concourses. New York-based MetroMedia’s portfolio includes M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Giants Stadium in New Jersey and Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
Stadium group granted extension
Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick granted The Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy an extension to Aug. 1 to raise the $15 million needed to save the dugout-to-dugout corner of the stadium. In the meantime, crews are expected to begin demolishing the rest of the stadium on a contract that calls for the contractors to be compensated through the sale of the scrap metal.
Reebok planning Patriot Place store
Reebok will open its first sporting goods store at Patriot Place in August, according to a report in the Boston Herald. The Foxboro-based store will be Reebok’s only retail location in the world where it sells its sports equipment side by side with its footwear and clothing, according to the report.
Dynamo promotes ‘Nothing But Nets’
The Houston Dynamo created a ticketing promotion to raise money for the global Nothing But Nets campaign. The NBN effort purchases bed nets for $10 each to help prevent the spread of malaria in Africa. The Dynamo created a ticket deal where every ticket purchased provides a bed net to a family in Africa. The ticket deal was distributed through an e-mail campaign targeting fans.
IRL celebrating at The Palms Nov. 5
The annual Indy Racing League Championship Celebration will be held Nov. 5 at The Palms in Las Vegas. The event will be held during the 43rd annual Specialty Equipment Market Association Show.
Rumors swirl on Chivas relocation
Chivas USA is in talks to build fields and possibly a youth stadium at Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana, Calif., fueling speculation among soccer fans that the team was contemplating a move to the city, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. Chivas USA co-owner Antonio Cue did not rule out that the site could eventually house Chivas USA, currently based in Carson, Calif., according to the report. Cue, said the proposed youth soccer facility could include as many as seven soccer fields and a 2,000 to 3,000-seat stadium, according to the report.
Group takes no action on Del Biaggio
The Nashville Metro Sports Authority took no action to place the NHL Predators in default of their Sommet Center lease in the wake of financial and legal troubles of the team’s minority owner William “Boots” Del Biaggio III, according to a report in The Tennessean. The authority appeared willing to give the team until at least Aug. 4 to replace the $9.8 million that Del Biaggio had pledged as his part of the guarantee under a new lease agreement, according to the report.
BNP Paribas serving at Taste of Tennis
BNP Paribas will title sponsor the 2008 Taste of Tennis in New York. The event, produced by AYS Sports Marketing and benefiting The Food Bank for New York City, is set for Aug. 21 at the W New York Hotel. This year’s lineup includes tennis stars Andy Roddick, Jelena Jankovic, Lleyton Hewitt and Robby Ginepri.
MetLife to be cornerstone partner
MetLife Inc. reached an agreement in principle to be the first cornerstone partner of the new Meadowlands stadium. As part of the deal, MetLife will have the exclusive naming rights to one of the four stadium entrances as well as one of the four main scoreboards inside the venue. MetLife also will become the official life insurance company of the venue’s two tenants, the New York Giants and New York Jets.
Soul has street-level billboard
Motomedia, a United Kingdom media company that specializes in transforming vacant storefronts into digital billboards, has created a street-level billboard for the Philadelphia Soul at Suburban Station. The digital billboard features Soul players, team highlights and video about the AFL team’s activities in the community through its Soul Charitable Foundation.
Coyotes, Clear Channel forge deal
The Phoenix Coyotes and Clear Channel Radio agreed to a new radio broadcast partnership. XTRA Sports 910 will become the Radio Home of the Coyotes, covering the team over the air and online at xtra910.com. XTRA also will serve as the flagship station of the Coyotes Radio Network.
Soccer tourney could mean big bucks
A youth soccer tournament is expected to bring $4.2 million in direct consumer spending to the local economy this week, according to the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau. The U.S. Youth Soccer Southern Regional Championships will bring 184 squads from across the Southeast to venues in Raleigh and Wilson, N.C. The tournament was scheduled to start June 20 and ends Wednesday. More than 70 hotels are expected to host more than 10,000 visitors.
Earthquakes featuring customized board
The San Jose Earthquakes are displaying a new, integrated LED video and scoring system for the 2008 MLS season, along with a custom sound system, designed and manufactured by Daktronics. The video display is 19 feet wide by 15 feet high. The custom Sportsound product designed and built for the Earthquakes includes a self-contained speaker system weighing more than a half-ton.

49ers financing plan deadline moved
The Santa Clara City Council voted 6-1 last week to extend the deadline for a San Francisco 49ers stadium financing deal to Feb. 1, according to a report in the San Jose Mercury-News. The vote moves a ballot measure to next June at the earliest or November 2009 at the latest.
ADT renews BankAtlantic Center deal
ADT Security Services renewed its presenting sponsorship of the BankAtlantic Center’s ADT Club on the Lexus Club Level through the 2009-10 Florida Panthers season. ADT installed a comprehensive video surveillance system throughout the BankAtlantic Center in 2007 to help provide a more safe and secure experience for the center’s visitors and staff.
Bills’ away series gets official logo
The Buffalo Bills and Rogers Centre unveiled the Bills Toronto series logo. The new mark features elements of Rogers Centre, CN Tower and the Bills’ charging buffalo.
