Homestyle: Biscuits’ new park ready

The new Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium helped bring a Class AA team to the Alabama city.
The city of Montgomery, Ala., projects a total $2.8 million over the next five years from revenue generated at its new ballpark, scheduled to open Friday night.
To lure the Class AA Orlando Rays to town, the city council in 2002 approved an increase of its lodging tax by 2.5 percent, to 12.5 percent, to pay for nearly the entire cost of the new $27.5 million Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium. In exchange, the team, now known as the Montgomery Biscuits, signed a 20-year lease that calls for the city to receive a minimum annual payment of $200,000. The deal provides the city with 10 percent of ticket, concessions and novelty revenue from games and other team events, 30 percent of premium-seat rental revenue, and 25 percent of food and beverage revenue from other, city-sponsored, events.
With its 20 luxury suites reserved in five-year deals and more than 2,800 season tickets sold, the team expects to cover its minimum before the first pitch is thrown.
The team is handling the marketing of the ballpark’s naming rights and will split any revenue equally with the city.
The ballpark is expected to be the centerpiece of a 20-year, $130 million development plan for the city’s downtown area and Alabama River front. The stadium structure incorporates a historic railroad station at the ballpark site. Five suites and the Club Car Bar, a concessions area open to premium-seat holders, are built into the former train shed. Other depot elements are included in the Whistle Stop Grille, one of the stadium’s three picnic areas, and the Locomotive Loft, a suite-level party deck. The tracks a few yards beyond the left-field fence are still used.
The concessions menu features biscuits and syrup. The team has partnerships with Mary B’s Biscuits and Alaga Syrup, which have large production facilities in town.
