Gutkowski demanding, but one of best bosses
Published December 23, 2002
I saw Andy Bernstein's piece on Bob Gutkowski ["Vision of SFX fades to black," Dec. 9-15] and wanted to comment on the "hard on subordinates" part.
Back in our mutual early days at MSG Network, I made a huge mistake in dealing with a writer that cost the network some press coverage on an issue that was extremely important to Bob. We were at a trade show in Atlantic City at the time, and I spent the whole day being concerned about how severe Bob's reaction would be when I told him of the misstep. Instead, Bob calmly asked me if the relationship with the writer would be OK, and when I assured him that it would be, he suggested that we just "move forward."
Bob expected a lot but absolutely was one of the best bosses I've ever had.
