College payment plan benefits only the rich

Paying NCAA players may be a necessity in the future, but the plan outlined by Maryland's Deborah Yow ["Pay players based on merchandise sold," Nov. 19] is quite short-sighted. Paying players with merchandise revenue would simply be a case of the rich getting richer. Jersey sales are prominent in the highest-profile programs (see television conferences) and usually sport the number of the most prominent player on those teams. While the best players in the high-profile programs and conferences would benefit from Ms. Yow's plan, other players on those very same teams would again get nothing.
The Peyton Mannings of the world would have money waiting for them at graduation (that they probably don't need) while the back-up offensive tackle on that same team would still be broke.
While the other guest columnists of this publication gave solid ideas on the future of college athletics, I believe Ms. Yow missed the mark.
