NBA, players at odds over 'BRI'

As NBA owners and players attempt to reach a new collective-bargaining agreement, the key issue will be the distribution of Basketball Related Income (BRI).

Owners say they paid players 57 percent of BRI last season, while the players union says it was closer to 55 percent. In a recent proposal, owners suggested cutting the players' share to 48 percent.

But before the two sides can agree on how to divide BRI, they first must agree on a definition for the term. Players have expressed some concern that BRI doesn't include some of the newer sources of revenue, such as arena naming rights.

Under the current system, BRI includes:

Ticket revenue.

Broadcast revenue.

Concessions sold in NBA arenas, or in team stores within 75 miles of arenas.

Forty percent of arena-signage revenue.

Forty percent of luxury-suite revenue.

Revenue from premium-seatlicenses.
