Bundesliga Again Tops European Football Leagues In Average Attendance

The Bundesliga in '16-17 had the "highest average attendances in Europe," once again "edging the English Premier League," according to Brian Homewood of REUTERS. A European Professional Football Leagues fan attendance report found the average attendance at a Bundesliga match "was 40,693, compared to 35,838" for an average EPL match. La Liga was "next with 27,609," followed by Serie A with 22,177 and Ligue 1 with 21,202. The EPL "boasted the fullest stadiums" with an average occupancy of 96.5%, compared to the Bundesliga's 64.7% (REUTERS, 1/16). The BBC reported the Scottish Premiership was first in terms of "fan attendance figures on a per capita basis" with an "average of 11,436 fans turning up" to each match. That "represents 0.21% of the population." Switzerland, Norway (both 0.14%) and Denmark (0.12%) are "next on the list," with the EPL (0.07%) 11th (BBC, 1/16).
