MATT HANCOCK was named U.K. Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport. His move as part of PM THERESA MAY's cabinet reshuffle follows KAREN BRADLEY’s departure to Northern Ireland (BROADBAND TV NEWS, 1/9). ... NICK PONTEFRACT was appointed as Sport England's new COO. He is currently the exec director of the Commonwealth Games Delivery Unit at the DCMS. Pontefract will replace RONA CHESTER in March (INSIDE THE GAMES, 1/8). ... Rugby Football League CCO and Super League Exec Dir ROGER DRAPER will leave the organization at the end of January. His exit "comes days after the departure" of RFL CEO NIGEL WOOD (BBC, 1/9). ... Int’l sports rights agency Spring Media announced its board appointed TOBIAS OSMUND as CEO. Osmund has over 20 years’ experience in the int’l media industry, most recently with the AP (Spring Media).

COACHES/MANAGERS: Englishman JOHN HERDMAN was named head coach of Canada’s national men’s football team after more than six yeas in charge of the women’s side. The 42-year-old took charge of the women’s team in Sept. ’11. He led the side to the World Cup quarterfinals in ’15 and won two Olympic Bronze Medals. Herdman also becomes the men’s national director, with responsibility for all age groups from U14 upward (BBC, 1/9). ... The Chilean FA announced Colombian REINALDO RUEDA as head coach of its men’s national team. Rueda’s contract is valid until the end of the South American qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup (AP, 1/8). ... League Championship side Nottingham Forest named AITOR KARANKA its next manager, with the former Middlesbrough coach signing a two-and-a-half-year deal. Karanka has been out of work since he was sacked by Middlesbrough in March (London GUARDIAN, 1/8). ... Premier League side Stoke City placed EDDIE NIEDZWIECKI in charge of the team following the sacking of MARK HUGHES on Saturday. The club hopes to have its new manager in place for the game at ManU on Monday (BBC, 1/8).
