Olympic Notes: WADA Whistleblower Facing Drug Trafficking Charges In Russia

Former Moscow anti-doping laboratory head Grigory Rodchenkov is "facing charges of trafficking highly potent illicit drugs in his home country." Rodchenkov, who fled Russia at the end of '15, has been "charged in absentia for illegally trafficking dangerous substances," Interfax reported, citing a source with knowledge of the situation. The latest development "comes in the wake of the Basmanny District Court in Moscow issuing an arrest warrant for Rodchenkov on charges of abusing his powers in office" (RT, 12/12).

Tokyo 2020 organizers proposed reducing the initially planned number of spectator seats by more than 30,000 at some venues for the Games. The proposed move is "aimed at reducing costs and also because of a lack of space for makeshift seating at venues that will stage boxing, equestrian and other sports." Other venues are "still being discussed and the reduction of seats could rise to even higher numbers" (KYODO, 12/12).
