Olympic Notes: IPC, Visa Extend Worldwide Partnership Through '20

The IPC and its longest-serving worldwide partner, Visa, extended their partnership through '20. The IPC and Visa will work together to create digital media campaigns that support the Games and athletes and highlight payment technologies around the world. Under the partnership which dates back to '03, Visa retains exclusive marketing and promotional rights within the payment services category (IPC).

Organizers of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics have "completed construction of all competition and non-competition venues," PyeongChang Organizing Committee Chair Lee Hee-beom said on Monday. PyeongChang had been "rushing to finish work on a number of projects" including hotels and event venues after "falling behind in the first few years of preparations" (REUTERS, 10/23).

Germany "reaffirmed its plan to participate in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games," the South Korean sports ministry said Tuesday. German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) CEO Michael Vesper said that Germany "trusts South Korea's efforts to make it a safe event" (YONHAP, 10/24).

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike announced a plan to make the Japanese capital "free of carbon dioxide emissions during the opening and closing days of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics." Tokyo will offset emissions during the four days with "donated credits acquired through a cap-and-trade program for big companies" that the metropolitan government launched in fiscal year '10, Koike said on Monday (JAPAN TIMES, 10/24).
