FA Reportedly Considering Bid To Host Champions League Final In '23

The FA reportedly could bid to host the Champions League final in '23, "confidential" UK Sport documents revealed, according to Dan Roan of the BBC. The game is one of a number of "hosting targets" and a "strategic priority." Staging parts of the Tour de France in '21 and athletics' World Championships in Birmingham "in 2027 or 2029" are also listed as "ambitions." UK Sport said that it is "actively considering the feasibility of mega events in a number of other sports." The funding agency announced it is investing almost £30M ($39.4M) over the next eight years "to maintain the country's position as a world-leading host of major sporting events." The FA declined to comment, "but has already announced plans" to bid for the 2021 Women's Euro, which is also listed in the documents as a "hosting target." It is understood the FA "would like to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Wembley" in '23 by hosting the final of Europe's premier club competition. Projections of staged, secured and target events from UK Sport's '17-25 hosting program include 7.2 million spectators and an "anticipated economic impact" of more than £440M ($577.4M) (BBC, 10/5).
