England honored former footballer BOBBY CHARLTON by naming a St. George's Park training pitch after him. Charlton, who will celebrate his 80th birthday on Oct. 11, was "presented with a signed England shirt to mark the occasion" (London TELEGRAPH, 10/2). ... ManU striker ROMELU LUKAKU was due in court in L.A. on Monday after he was arrested "over an excessive noise complaint following repeated warnings from police." Lukaku, 24, was cited for a misdemeanor after five verbal warnings at a Beverly Hills home where he was staying (TELEGRAPH, 10/2). ... Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG Manager ANDRÉ VILLAS-BOAS has been "handed an eight-match ban" by the Chinese FA, ruling him out of "making an appearance on the touchline" for the remainder of the CSL season. The Portuguese coach was handed the suspension and ordered to pay a fine of 40,000 yuan ($6,000) following his sending off during SIPG's 1-0 win over Beijing Guoan on Sept. 22 (REUTERS, 10/2). ... Formula 1 team Mercedes driver LEWIS HAMILTON said that he "might take a knee in protest when the national anthem is played" prior to the U.S. Grand Prix later this month. Hamilton: "I've not even thought about that race, but of course I will have to start to think about it -- what would be right for me to do, or do I even need to get involved? It's not my national anthem, but the issue that is in the States ... well, it's not just in the States, it is a global thing. It's more focused and probably at its worst perhaps in America. I think we all do need to stand together" (AUTOWEEK, 10/1). ... Former England striker RICKIE LAMBERT announced his retirement from football. The 35-year-old ex-Southampton, Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion forward has been without a club since leaving League Championship side Cardiff City "by mutual consent in July." He scored 218 goals in 607 league games in a career that "spanned 19 years and took in nine clubs" (BBC, 10/2).

IN MEMORY: Former All Blacks head coach PETER BURKE died, aged 90. Burke coached the All Blacks between '81 and '82, with his stint in charge including the "infamous 1981 Springbok Tour." A Taranaki centurion, Burke played 117 matches for the amber and blacks including a "successful Ranfurly Shield tenure as captain" in '58. Burke's 11 matches in charge of the All Blacks included series wins over the Springboks and the Wallabies. Burke served as New Zealand Rugby Union president in '94 and received a New Zealand Order of Merit in '97 for "services to sport" (NEW ZEALAND HERALD, 10/2).
