Five men charged over the Hillsborough disaster and its aftermath "appeared in crown court." The men, including ex-South Yorkshire Police Chief Inspector NORMAN BETTISON, "sat in a glass-walled dock at Preston Crown Court in Lancashire." No formal pleas were given in the hearing but their legal teams "indicated they will deny the charges" (BBC, 9/6). ... New Zealand rugby player D.J. FORBES has "hung up his boots." Forbes made his New Zealand sevens debut in '06 and "played in a record 89 World Series tournaments and 512 World Series games, scoring 153 tries" (STUFF, 9/6). ... WIPERE TAKITIMU, 17, signed with the National Rugby League Canberra Raiders' U20 side. The Manukura School student previously trained with the Gold Coast Titans (STUFF, 9/6). ... ANDRÉS INIESTA contradicted Barcelona President JOSEP MARIA BARTOMEU, and "denied that there is an agreement in principle for him to extend his contract at the Camp Nou beyond its expiry at the end of the season." On Tuesday, Bartomeu claimed the club was "almost in a position to announce a contract renewal for the midfielder" (ESPN.com, 9/6). ... EPL side West Ham United "refused to be drawn further into the escalating war of words" with Portuguese side Sporting after its president, BRUNO DE CARVALHO, referred to West Ham's owners as the "Dildo Brothers." West Ham and Sporting have been "in dispute over whether West Ham submitted a formal transfer bid for Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho before the end of the transfer window" (London INDEPENDENT, 9/6). ... World No. 2 ANDY MURRAY will "most likely" miss the rest of the season due to a hip injury that kept him out of the US Open, he announced on Wednesday. The 30-year-old has had "a disappointing season, winning only one title and losing his place at the top of the world rankings" (REUTERS, 9/6).

COMMON GOAL: ManU midfielder JUAN MATA said that he is "not trying to mend the reputation of professional footballers with his pledge to donate a portion of his salary to charity." Mata, 29, is donating 1% of his wage to Common Goal. His request for other footballers to do the same prompted Bayern Munich defender MATS HUMMELS to "join in." Mata said that the gesture is "not about fixing a perception that footballers are spoiled." Mata: "If it does I am happy but it's not the aim. Sometimes football can have a bad reputation but there are great people in football who are trying to help. I believe there are great values in football and if this helps on that then great" (ESPN.com, 9/6).

DROP THE MIC: Commentator JOHN MOTSON, 72,"will call time on his BBC career" after the conclusion of the current football season. The broadcaster, popularly known as "Motty," is in his 50th consecutive year with the corporation. He covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships, 29 FA Cup finals and "more than 200 England games." Motson, "known for his trademark sheepskin coats and encyclopaedic knowledge of the game," wants to continue his links with the sport (BBC, 9/6).
