UK Athletics Makes £1.1M Loss Due To Fall In Sponsorship Income, London 2017 Costs

UK Athletics made a loss of £1.1M ($1.4M) last year "because of a fall in sponsorship income and the cost of covering prize money at this month's World Championships in London," the latest accounts revealed, according to the LONDON TIMES. UK Athletics CEO Niels de Vos saw his basic pay rise by 7% on the previous year to £200,741, with a £19,380 bonus plus £67,615 in pension contributions taking his total earnings to £287,736 for the year ending March 31. The bonus is "less than a quarter" of the £90,000 that de Vos received in the year after the London 2012 Olympics, but his base salary is "significantly higher now" -- it was £164,000 in '12. A spokesperson said, "UKA does not comment on the remuneration of individuals beyond the disclosures included within the financial accounts." The annual report shows that UK Athletics paid £3.6M ($4.7M) to London 2017 Ltd. toward covering athletes' prize money at the championships but charged the two organizing companies -- London 2017 Ltd. and London Championships Ltd. -- costs totaling £4.1M ($5.3M) (LONDON TIMES, 8/26).
