Event Notes: Premiership Rugby Unlikely To Alter Playoff Schedule For Lions

Premiership Rugby "reacted with incredulity" on Thursday to the "idea that English clubs might tinker" with their playoff schedule every four years "to grant the British & Irish Lions more preparation time." Pro14 officials "expressed a willingness to answer the Lions' pleas" by amending their season-ending schedule in '21, but the Premiership "seems unlikely to follow suit." Premiership CEO Mark McCafferty said, "We've got 24 rounds of the Premiership [22 regular season matches, plus two playoff weekends] and that's not changing in '21, '25 or whenever" (LONDON TIMES, 8/25).

Three "adverse" doping samples from the World Athletics Championships are being investigated by the Athletics Integrity Unit. None of the samples belong to athletes who won medals in London. The AIU said that there was a "strong, positive reaction" from athletes (BBC, 8/25).

John McEnroe said that the ATP Tour "must consider reviewing its schedule in a bid to cut down on injuries" after Canadian Milos Raonic joined the list of top players sitting out the US Open. While Raonic is "expected to rejoin the Tour later in the year," Novak Djokovic, Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka have been ruled out for the rest of the season. McEnroe said, "They have worked over the years to get it down to nine or 10 months. I think perhaps they would be better served to continue to look at that (REUTERS, 8/25).
