Event Notes: Floyd Mayweather Jr., Conor McGregor To Use 8-Ounce Gloves

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor will box with smaller gloves, "though not nearly as small as the ones McGregor is used to wearing." Nevada boxing regulators on Wednesday gave the two fighters "an exemption to a rule requiring 10-ounce gloves," approving eight-ounce gloves. The fight will take place Aug. 26. Commissioners also approved "veteran referee" Robert Byrd as the third man in the ring (AP, 8/16).

ONE Championship announced its inaugural event in Shanghai, which will take place Sept. 2 at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. In the main event, ONE welterweight champion Ben Askren of the U.S. will defend his title against Zebaztian Kadestam of Sweden. ONE Championship also announced partnerships with Didi Chuxing, I-Fitness and Tourism Authority of Thailand (ONE Championship).

Sophia Warner, an IPC World Championships silver medal-winning sprinter with cerebral palsy, is creating an event for the physically impaired that "embraces all levels of disability and all levels of fitness." Her Superhero Series launches on Saturday with a triathlon event at Dorney Lake in Windsor, England. Warner hoped for 500 entrants "but more than 2,000 have applied, many of whom have never participated in sport." Teams will be captained by Paralympians including Jonnie Peacock, David Weir and Kadeena Cox (LONDON TIMES, 8/17).
