Olympic Notes: National Stadium To Be Used Only For Team Ball Sports After Tokyo Games

The new National Stadium being built for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics "will be used exclusively for team ball sports" like football and rugby after the Games. Government officials are reportedly "finalizing plans to build seats on top of the running track around the field of the main Olympic stadium," which is scheduled for completion in late Nov. '19. The decision to not make it a multipurpose venue is "aimed at bringing in a steady stream of revenue to offset the expected high maintenance costs" (KYODO, 7/26).

Telecom Singtel renewed its partnership with the Singapore National Olympic Council for five years. The company will "fund the training of Team Singapore athletes competing in various sporting events." This includes the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Singtel will also "provide support through its mobile plans for Team Singapore" (MARKETING INTERACTIVE, 7/25).

The Irish Cabinet "agreed to publish retired Judge Carroll Moran's report into the Rio ticketing scandal last summer." It will be published "within 14 days." Last month, former Olympic Council of Ireland President Pat Hickey said that his legal team "had warned against the publication of the report as it might prejudice his trial in Brazil" (RTÉ, 7/26).
