Olympic Notes: China Expects Winter Sport Tourism Boom Ahead Of 2022 Beijing Games

China expects a "boom" in winter sport tourism as local authorities "rush to tap opportunities" presented by the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games. According to the China National Tourism Administration, China "hopes to mobilize 300 million people in the country to participate in winter sports by the time that the 2022 Winter Olympics is held" (XINHUA, 7/24).

The city of Calgary "wants more information" from the IOC before deciding whether to pursue a bid for the 2026 Winter Games. A potential bid was on the agenda of Monday's city council meeting in the city that hosted the 1988 Winter Games. But the bid exploration committee concluded that while a bid is "feasible," it is not sure to be "prudent" (AFP, 7/25).
