League Notes: Goyder Defends AFL Commission's Actions Over Staff Resignations

Australian Football League Commission Chair Richard Goyder "strongly defended" the commission's "actions over the resignation of two senior staff over illicit affairs," arguing there would have been "tidal waves" of opposition "if that had not been the outcome." Goyder said that the AFL would "never try to set standards" for community behavior because "we are so imperfect" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 7/26).

Russia on Tuesday told athletes set to compete as neutrals at next month's world championships that "they will be paid by the state despite not officially representing their country." Nineteen Russian athletes were on Monday entered into the competition being hosted from Aug. 4-13 in London (REUTERS, 7/25).

The Club Players Association "unveiled its three-point plan for altering the fixture schedule to preserve the club scene in Gaelic Games." The three main points of the proposals are:

  • Ring-fencing April as an "exclusive club only month."
  • December as a "close season."
  • Completing club competitions "in a calendar year" (IRISH INDEPENDENT, 7/25).
Int'l Boxing Association (AIBA) President Wu Ching-kuo is "set to be ousted from his position with instability and financial turmoil growing" at the organization. Wu will be "asked to step down after 13 members voted to pass a motion of no confidence" in the president, with a further two abstaining from voting at a meeting of exec committee members in Moscow on Monday (London GUARDIAN, 7/24).
