Franchise Notes: Mercedes To Leave DTM, Enter Formula E For '19-20 Season

Mercedes will leave the German Touring Car (DTM) championship at the end of next year and enter the Formula E series in the '19-20 season. Mercedes said in a statement that it was carrying out a "strategic repositioning of its motorsport activities." It added, "This new approach will see Mercedes-Benz competing at both ends of the motorsport spectrum" (REUTERS, 7/24).

The "new-look board" of the Scottish Professional Football League is "expected to resist calls for a fresh investigation into Rangers' controversial use of employee benefit trusts." Despite "renewed claims that the club should be stripped of titles won when the tax-avoidance scheme was in operation," retrospective action is "thought to be unlikely" after the league's annual meeting on Monday. Hearts Owner Ann Budge said, "There's going to be a statement on Wednesday. Other than that, I'm afraid I can't say any more" (LONDON TIMES, 7/25).

The National Rugby League integrity unit will interview former Manly CEO Tim Cleary as part of its salary cap investigations "after the Sea Eagles agreed to lift confidentiality clauses binding a raft of former staffers." The parties remain "locked in negotiations over the NRL's jurisdiction in its probe," with the Sea Eagles "reluctant to hand over the personal laptops and phones of its employees." However, the release of employees from a gag order in their contracts is a "step forward that will expedite the process" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 7/25).
