South Korea President Vows To Leave Door To 2018 Olympics Open To North Korea

South Korea President Moon Jae-in said on Monday that North Korea "will be given until the very last minute to decide on its participation" at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, according to Peter Rutherford of REUTERS. Moon, speaking as the countdown to Asia's first Winter Olympics outside Japan "ticked down to 200 days," has "been keen to get North Korea involved" in the Feb. 9-25 event, "despite none of its athletes meeting the qualification standards." While "the two Koreas technically remain at war," Moon, who came to power in May, "pledged to engage the North in dialogue as well as bring pressure to impede its nuclear and missile programs" (REUTERS, 7/24). YONHAP reported Moon "promised all-out efforts to help ensure the country's successful hosting" of the Games. He said, "For the government, it will be the first major international event since its launch. And therefore, I believe the government too has an obligation to make it a success." He added, "Up until now, the government has left the job to the organizing committee and Gangwon Province, but with 200 days left now, I promise the central government to join its forces to make PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games a complete success without fail" (YONHAP, 7/24).
