Facility Notes: WACA Still Hopes To Open Perth Stadium With Australia-England ODI

Officials are "refusing to give up" on opening Perth Stadium with the Australia-England one-day international on Jan. 28. Cricket Australia and the Western Australia Cricket Association are "prepared to delay a call on where the match will be played for as long as possible, so they can get a better guide on the stadium's progress." WACA CEO Christina Matthews said that the venue decision "could be put off because ticketing for one-dayers was relatively simple" (THE WEST AUSTRALIAN, 7/25).

Security barriers are to be placed around Premier League side Newcastle United's St. James' Park "in an effort to prevent terror attacks." The portable structures are to be "erected at key points on matchdays to stop vehicles driving into crowds." The club and Northumbria Police "stressed there is no specific threat to the city or Newcastle fans" (BBC, 7/21).
