London Organizers Urged To Bid For 2019 World Para Athletics Championships

The closing speeches "had not even started" at the end of the World Para Athletics Championships on Sunday before outgoing UK Athletics Chair Ed Warner, the co-chair of London 2017, was calling for the event to return in '19, according to Ron Lewis of the LONDON TIMES. Warner: "You would have to have a heart of stone not to want to do it." These world championships "certainly raised the bar." Ticket sales of more than 305,000, including one session last Sunday that saw a crowd of 33,000, "made the event more comparable with a Paralympics than a world championships." But Warner "will have to work fast to make his dream a reality." Bids "must be tabled by the start of September" and at least two countries -- one believed to be Malaysia -- "are already bidding to host the event." The cost "would likely be in eight figures, although Warner pointed out that would be a small fraction of the cost" of the suggested bid to stage the Commonwealth Games in the North West in '22. Warner said, "I think you get 50 of these for one Commonwealth Games" (LONDON TIMES, 7/24). The BBC reported "numerous athletes have called for the event to stay at London Stadium." Richard Bowker, who will replace Warner as chair of UK Athletics in January, said, "We will begin discussions with partner organizations immediately to see if we can secure the necessary support." He added that he believed "there is the will to make it happen" (BBC, 7/24).
