CRISTIANO RONALDO is "under the taxman's scrutiny once again as his luxury charter yacht was boarded by customs agents" off the coast of Formentera, Spain. The Portuguese int'l, who faces a court hearing on July 31 over four counts of alleged tax fraud, "was returning to the yacht from a meal onshore with his family when it was boarded by three armed officers" (London TELEGRAPH, 7/12). ... UAE Para-athlete ABDULLAH HAYAYEI died "following a training incident casting a pall over the World Para-Athletics Championships which begin in London on Friday." He was 36. Hayayei, who was to compete in the shot put, discus and javelin events, "suffered the fatal injury while training in London on Tuesday" (AFP, 7/12). ... Bangladesh cricketer TAMIM IQBAL quit his contract with Essex County Cricket Club after his family was reportedly the subject of an "acid attack." Bangladesh's Daily Star reported Tamim, his wife, AYESHA SIDDIQA and one-year-old son returned home "after the alleged incident while they dined at a restaurant." Tamim's wife, who wears a hijab, was reportedly targeted by people who "attempted to throw acid at her" (STUFF, 7/12). ... ManU named midfielder MICHAEL CARRICK captain. Carrick, 35, is the club's longest-serving player, having joined in '06. He replaces WAYNE ROONEY in the role (BBC, 7/11).
