Premier League Clubs On Pace To Match Last Year's Record Outlay Of £1.17B

Just over one week after the summer transfer window opened, Premier League clubs have "splashed" a total of £571M ($733.6M), making it "already the fifth-highest-spending window ever," according to Chris Cutmore of the London DAILY MAIL. Romelu Lukaku's £75M ($96.4M) switch from Everton to ManU and Arsenal's £53M ($68M) capture of Alexandre Lacazette have fueled an "early-summer surge in spending since the window opened on July 1." With the "vast majority of the window remaining" -- it closes on Aug. 31 at 11pm -- and "plenty of massive deals currently being negotiated," this summer's spending "looks set to challenge the record" set last summer, when an "incredible" £1.17B was "forked out." Chelsea's £70M ($90M) pursuit of Álvaro Morata and the club's "tug-of-war" with ManU over £40M ($51.4M) Tiemoué Bakayoko are "just two of the potential transfers that could soon push this year's total even higher." This year, ManU has again "flashed the most cash," with Victor Lindelöf joining from Portuguese side Benfica for £30.7M ($39.4M) and Lukaku's "big move" adding up to a £106M ($136.2M) outlay (DAILY MAIL, 7/11).
