Franchise Notes: River Plate Players Reportedly Test Positive For Banned Diuretic

Argentine first division side River Plate is "embroiled in a scandal" related to multiple players testing positive for Hydrochlorothiazide, "a diuretic drug" banned by WADA. There is "a discrepancy regarding the number of players implicated." CONMEBOL announced "at least three players tested positive," while an official announcement from River Plate cites two players. Argentine newspaper La Nación stated on Thursday that "as many as seven players could have tested positive." The two players River Plate named are Lucas Martínez Quarta and Camilo Mayada (AS, 6/23).

League Championship side Sunderland's prospective new German owners want fellow countryman Jürgen Klinsmann to be the club's next manager. The "ambitious" group is locked in talks with current Owner Ellis Short and has "big plans" should it complete a £90M ($114.4M) takeover in the next few days. Klinsmann is central to the group's idea of "trying to raise the profile" of Sunderland (London DAILY MAIL, 6/24).

Serie A side Fiorentina owners are "ready to sell" the club, a statement on the club's official website said on Monday. The statement said, "The owners ... are absolutely ready, in light of the dissatisfaction of supporters, to step aside and hand the club to whoever wants to buy it and manage as they see fit." Fiorentina, which finished eighth last season, is owned by the Della Valle family, which includes entrepreneur Diego Della Valle, who controls luxury group Tod's (REUTERS, 6/26).

Belgian First Division A side Royal Antwerp signed a three-season collaboration agreement with Portuguese side Porto. The two clubs hope to “exchange know-how, notably in the sector of youth training.” The agreement was signed between Porto President Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa and Antwerp Sporting Dir Luciano D’Onofrio (BELGA, 6/25).
