Football Notes: Atlético Madrid To Play Preseason Friendly In Mexico

Atlético Madrid will play a preseason friendly in Mexico against Liga MX side Toluca. The game will take place on July 25 at Toluca's Nemesio Díez stadium. Atlético's last trip to Mexico was in '14, when it played Liga MX side Club América at Estadio Azteca. The club acquired Mexican side Atlético San Luis in March (EL PAÍS, 6/20).

UEFA will reveal more details on the concessions made by Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg to "comply with rules banning clubs owned by the same entity from playing in the same competition." The clubs met officials from UEFA's club financial control body on Friday to "explain a series of changes they have made to Salzburg's ownership." The finer points of these changes "have not yet been made public, but it is understood Red Bull billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz no longer owns the Austrian champions," several Red Bull employees who held management roles at the club "have left" and Red Bull is now "only a sponsor, on reduced financial terms" (PA, 6/21).

The Association of Australian Football Clubs "is moving to the next phase in its battle to establish a national second division" for the A-League and a promotion and relegation structure in Australian football. It will hold its first AGM where new directors, drawn from the organization's eight member federations, "will be formally appointed." Collectively, the National Premier Leagues clubs have more than 30,000 registered players of "semi-professional and amateur status" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 6/21).

ManU was cleared by FIFA of wrongdoing in the deal to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus last August. However, FIFA will open disciplinary proceedings against Juventus after asking both clubs last month for "clarification on the deal." The inquiry was "believed to concern who was involved" in the £89.3M transfer, and how much they were paid. Pogba's agent, Mino Raiola, reportedly earned £41M from the deal (BBC, 6/20).

Chile said that it will consider bidding to host the 2026 World Cup with some of its South American neighbors. Chilean Football Federation (ANFP) President Arturo Salah said, "We will consider the possibility of doing it together with other countries, it can be with two countries or three countries. We'll have to see. The bidding period is open" (AP, 6/21).
