Scottish Football Execs Warn MSPs Of FIFA Intervention Over Reform Calls

Scottish football execs "warned MSPs they risk the wrath of FIFA if they continue to call for reforms of the game," according to Gary Ralston of the Scotland DAILY RECORD. However, their claims have been "strongly rejected by campaigners and the players' union" as Scottish Professional Football League CEO Neil Doncaster and Scottish FA CEO Stewart Regan "prepare to face another grilling at Holyrood." Doncaster has been recalled to the Scottish Parliament on Thursday "amid claims he lied to MSPs in December on his knowledge of the failure of clubs to pay the national minimum wage to players." He will be joined by Regan after Scotland Commissioner for Children Tam Baillie told parliament the governing body is "not fit to regulate itself over the issue of youth contracts." In a joint submission, the SFA and SPFL said, "FIFA/UEFA statutes specifically prohibit any form of third party influence/intervention, including government intervention, in football." But Professional Footballers' Association Scotland CEO Fraser Wishart said, "It is my opinion that in the circumstances surrounding the petition, it is unlikely FIFA would intervene should the government decide to become involved with the application of an individual's statutory rights" (DAILY RECORD, 6/13).
