Police Presence Boosted At France-England Friendly, With 80,000 Fans Expected

Some 80,000 supporters were expected on Tuesday for the friendly between France and England, with French President Emmanuel Macron and England PM Theresa May in attendance as well, according to LE PARISIEN. Paris police insisted that the security operation put in place will host 80,000 fans. Nearly 1,100 officers and an anti-drone device will be deployed for the match. Pre-screening and filtering of spectators will be done “by private security agents supported by police.” Parking at the Stade de France will “only be accessible by those with reserved spots and the vehicles will be searched” (LE PARISIEN, 6/13).

SOLIDARITY: In London, Luke Brown reported French newspaper L’Equipe published the words to God Save the Queen ahead of the match, "with fans urged to sing along in an act of solidarity after the recent terrorist attacks in Manchester and London." England hosted France four days after 130 people were killed in the Nov. '15 Paris attacks, when suicide bombers struck outside the Stade de France "before several mass shootings at cafes and restaurants." In an act of solidarity, English supporters sang the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, "with the words displayed on giant screens around Wembley Stadium." In honor of the victims of the attacks in Britain, "the national anthems will be reversed, meaning God Save the Queen will follow La Marseillaise, with the words to each anthem displayed on the stadium's giant screen" (INDEPENDENT, 6/13).
