Media Notes: Telefónica Adds Live Football Content To Mobile Coverage In Chile, Brazil

Telefónica announced plans to add live football content to its mobile coverage in Chile and Brazil. In Chile, the telecom’s subsidiary, Movistar Chile, will stream this summer's FIFA Confederations Cup and next year’s World Cup. In Brazil, Telefónica's Vivo will stream the national team's friendly with Australia on Tuesday on mobile devices. The deal makes Vivo the first operator in Brazil to livestream football games on mobile phones (SOCCEREX, 6/12).

Digital TV Research estimated an increase of 254 million pay-TV subscribers (up by 35%) in 138 countries between '10 and '16, taking the global total to 969 million. According to the Global Pay TV Subscriber Databook, digital cable TV created the most additions by platform -- at 256 million. However, analog cable TV lost 218 million subscribers (BROADBAND TV NEWS, 6/11).

The "latest carriage fee dispute between Discovery and a major European platform was resolved ahead of the weekend’s World Cup qualifiers." Telia customers in Sweden "narrowly avoided missing Kanal 5’s coverage of Saturday night’s 2-1 victory over France" after Discovery-owned channels were removed on Wednesday (BROADBAND TV NEWS, 6/12).

Coverage of Le Mans 24 Hours will return to Eurosport this week. With nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen providing analysis, Eurosport will show 38 hours of Le Mans action, including build-up to the event and every lap of the race (Eurosport).

TNT’s Stan Van Gundy, ESPN’s Tim Reed, NBA Playoffs and NFL Draft

On this week’s pod, SBJ’s Austin Karp has two Big Get interviews. The first is with TNT’s Stan Van Gundy as he breaks down the NBA Playoffs from the booth.
