Victoria's Top Cop Says Development Of Security Measures Has Stagnated

Development of "sophisticated security measures at major Melbourne sporting events has stagnated," suggesting airport-style security at matches "may be the way of the future in the context of increasing terror threats," Victoria Victims of Crime Commissioner Greg Davies said, according to THE AUSTRALIAN. As Victoria Police announced it would boost officer numbers across the Central Business District over the long weekend following the "Brighton siege," retired policeman and former Victoria Police Association Secretary Davies "called for tighter security" at sports matches. Davies: "The reality is, with most sporting events there is a cursory glance in a handbag, and if there's not a bottle of alcohol sitting on top, you get waved through. People will react in different ways to the suggestion security should be tightened; the delays will be more significant than they are now if it’s done properly. But I like to think in a bit of time people will approach it like airport security. They won’t carry metallic objects with them as they go through, and it will speed it up again." Following Monday's siege in Brighton, Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said that police had "reviewed all security measures and were comfortable with the operations in place" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 6/9).
